How can I know if this product will be compatible with my motherboard ?

Your motherboard has to have a "PCI Express Full-Mini Card slot" to use this.  If you purchased your motherboard from Newegg you can look at the specs and/or pictures of the motherboard (zoom in to look for the slot).  If you have a Dell or some commercial machine you can look at the motherbaord to see if it has the slot.  I bought this card for a very small motherboard that is discontinued on Newegg, but you can search for "D2700DC" (without the quotes) and look at the picture (click on it for larger picture) if you want to see what the slot it goes in looks like (the slot is just to the right of the white PCI card slot in the picture).

i see this pci-e has the ports for Data connector , what about the power connector for the hard drives and/or the DVD-ROM drive ,

do i have to connect to extrenal power supply ?

Yes, you will still need to connect your devices to a separate power source. There are only SATA connectors on this card, which do not provide power.

Will this fit my PCI express x1 on a Gateway DX4860 Core I5. I have acquired a 2TB 6Gb HDD and was wondering if I can come close to 500MB/s?

My controller on the motherboard seems to go as high as 1.5 Gb/s. The HDD is maxed out at 106 MB/s sequential and 233 MB/s non-sequential raid when tested.

The form factor of this card is mini-PCI express. It is physically not compatible with PCI express x1. You must use a card that is PCI express, not "mini" PCI express.  Not all motherboards support "mini"-PCI express cards.

What is the size of this card? My PC Mini PCIe slot has very small space around it (I believe it's called half size) that can take a Wi-Fi size card only.

This is a full-size card (50.95mm), so if your slot is half-size (26.8mm) it will not fit.
