Is this compatible with iPad? The iPad I have (I think it is iPad 3, got it a couple of years ago) has a minuscule port where I connect it to charge. It is smaller than the port on the macbook

I have no idea because I don't have an iPad.  There are a number of quiete similar looking ports, and they are certainly not all the same.

This adapter  has  a  Micro HDMI Male  plug on the end and it plugs into Micro HDMI ports so that you can connect an additional monitor to a laptop.  But not all laptops can do this and they certainly don't all have this same port.   It has a VGA port on the other end any many, many monitors can connect to it.

A charging port is not likely to be compatible with a port for connecting a monitor.  You need to chech the iPad's specifications.
