Is this product a "download", or a CD with software, or just a product code that can be used to renew existing Norton Antivirus software already running on my computer?

This is a boxed version which includes a CD with software and a product key for a one year subscription to be used on up to 3 PCs.

The software can be installed either from the included CD or from their website.

Now that the point has been made, if you wait until your current subscription is about to expire, you can use it to start your 1-year subscription at that time. The one year subscription starts the first time you activate the product key.

Is this product compatible with window 7 ?

Yes - absolutely. I am running Norton now on Win7 64 bit and 
have no problems. I am a long time user of Norton and feel confident that it has functioned exceptionally well over the past many years. Essentially, I have had ZERO problems with Norton both in installation and virus protection. It runs well in the background to download live updates and computer scans transparent to regular or normal computer use.

Can this version be installed on Win XP PC?

of course - but XP is only good until April.
After April when a hacker creates a hack from a vulnerability there will not be a Microsoft fix.
Upgrade to Win7 at least.

It says 3 PCs, Do can they be different family member's PCs? For instance: My desktop (1), my laptop (2) and can third be my grandfather's PC? Thanks.

Yes, this is exactly what I did.
3 PC at different locations.
I did registered all of the antivirus installation using my own account with Symantec.

Is this a yearly price or does the purchase qualify for lifetime updates?
