Question 1

How does this work?  I have 3 IP cameras and a Synology server.
Currently I cannot get the server to work with my cameras.  I have tried using synology software that I downloaded with the server, but it would not work.

Will this software work with any IP camera?

Hi Robert. In my case I have 2 IP cameras, both d-link. The synology nas comes with 1 free camera license built in, so I would expect at least one camera to work out of the box (unless it isn't compatable). They support over 3000 IP cameras so I'd be surprised if that's the case. 
Anyhow, the first ones free and any additional camera that you add to the server is going to require you to buy one of these licenses. I think the sell 3 packs as well. 
It came as a shock to me at first, but after realizing how much it costs for sophisticated surveillance software, it's nice that they provide the software for free and monetize per camera.

Is it possible to get the license emailed?

No
I do not think there is any way you can get the license e-mailed to you. the License is sealed in a packet and theer is no way of knowing what the license number is without breaking the seals.
The camera and extra license work great.

Why is this so overpriced?

I wouldn't consider this overpriced for the functionality that you receive compared to many other products out there. This gives you storage, retrieval, lookup, archiving, etc. Many of the other camera packages don't come close to this functionality. I use three cameras at my work and I love to ability to look at the video from weeks past. Just my opinion on the matter.
