Question 1

Does the software include a multimedia player that I can operate from any TV or do I need to get a separate media player such as WDTV by Western Digital?

If not this model, is there another Synology model that will?

yes and no.  I keep all my videos and other media on the 1515.  You can use Synologies apps (go look on the synology site for all the apps you can get - pretty much covers the gambit).

however,  I run a PLEX server on my computer.  with Plex, my son in california, and the two in orlando, and my mother in N.C. and I all share all our libraries, so with a plex app on computer or tv, or where  ever, you can watch anything from anywhere.

Can you run PLEX on the 1515? yes you can. depends on how much it gets used, plex is a resource hog, and it runs happily as a background task on my pc,  so i don't bother to put it on the synology -  it is a NAS not a media server, BUT it can do both. look on the PLEX site to see what models of synology their server will run on  - 1515 is one of them.

or.. as i said you can use synologys apps - not as universall a client base as plex... but it will work.

Question 2

Can I take 3 4tb drives and make a Raid 5 and at the same time use the other 2 drives and mirror and make a 2nd volume? So can I create two volumes a raid 5 and a totally separate raid 1 mirror with 2 drives?

2nd question I have a few VM's on a 2012 R2 hyperV, can use the Synology to store my running VMs?

Yes, this can be done by creating two separate disk groups under the Disk Group tab in the Storage Manager application. Then, use the Volume tab under the Storage Manager application to create the volumes you want. I believe, it can be done during the initial setup process, but I haven't done a fresh setup in sometime.

The Synology NAS can be used to store your VMs. As an example, we (the IT group I'm in) use an ESXi host to run the VM's, but we store the images remotely on a Synology NAS (an older version of the DS1515+).

Question 3

Can I use mismatched drives like a Drobo can?  I want to upgrade from my Drobo, but the drives are not all the same.

I don't know for certain, but I can't think of why you wouldn't be able to. There is a list of supported disks for this NAS. Be sure all of your drives are listed on that page. Last I checked, that last was huge.
