I see a lot of info regardim SMR vs CMR HDD what is the recommended one to use for these brand of NAS?

CMR and/or PMR.   Seagate uses only CMR or PMR (Seagate IronWolf drives are all CMR or PMR).   Not all WD Red drives are CMR/PMR.  Beware if you are looking at "cheap" WD Red drives, they are usually SMR.

Is there a limit on Drive size?  Will this accept 12 TB drives?

Could I use this with two SSDs instead of rotating drives?

Sure as long as they are sata, but keep in mind ssds have wear leveling the more you write to them they can degrade faster.

Does this come ready to use? Or do I have to buy internal parts.

Hi Allen,
Per the specs of the DS220+ (Diskless) "HDD Interface: 2 x 3.5" or 2.5" SATA HDD/SSD (drives not included)". The only other hardware required to setup a NAS with the DS220+ would be 2 x drives of your choosing. I'd recommend a pair of 3.5" SATA HDD drives with CMR (conventional magnetic recording)
