Sorry for a noob question but this unit does not come with any storage?  It requires the purchase of HDD's or SSD's?

Correct, this unit does NOT come with any storage devices.  You will need to source your own drives.

What size disk drive does this machine take? 3.5 or 5 inch.

I'm not sure a 5" disk is?  This unit accepts the standard 3.5" HDD.

You can also use a 2.5" SSD but it requires the purchase of an optional 2.5" disk holder.

does this support raid ?

Yes, RAID 1, mirrored. My two 2 TB drives were reduced to 1.5 TB after being mirrored and mounted as a volume.
