Question 1

I see this is a 4 bay unit, but can you tell me how big of a hard drive each bay can hold?

Accepted Answer

The DS411slim is made to hold 2.5" SATA hard drives, these are the small "laptop' drives, not the bigger desktop models. The benefit of the 2.5" SATA is that they use less energy, are quieter, but usually a bit more expensive. If you like you can use SSD drives, but that probably would be overkill for a NAS.

The DS411slim has lesser memory than it's "bigger" models which use desktop drives. That's for me the one major difference, but I love the slim model. I run it without any issues and Synology's software is top of the line for NAS management. I highly recommend this or any others of their products.

Question 2

what is the maximum storage capacity?

Accepted Answer

Maximum storage is 4TB according to Synology website.

Question 3

I want to go whole hog and add SSD drives. Why? Less energy consumption and way, way cooler. (My 4 3.5 drive BlackArmor NAS heats up my office terribly.) Will the DS4 accept SSDs?

Accepted Answer

The bays are for 3.5" drives, so you'd need adapters.

Question 4

Does ds411slim accept *any* 1TB SATA iii 7200 RPM drives? I checked the Synology website and looked up all the supported Western Digital 1TB drives, all were 5200 or 5400 RPM with a 3.0GB/S transfer rate.

Accepted Answer

I believe so. I've been running 4 7200 RPM drives for a number of years without any issues.

Question 5

Can the ram be upgraded?

Accepted Answer

No, this model does not have the option of upgrading RAM as other Synology NAS’s do.
