Question 1

Ad says comes with 8GB RAM, yet description says 2GB RAM.  Which is it?  -Thx

That 2gb is an option. You can get 2gb OR 8gb.  Mine has 8gb of RAM, which I highly recommend.

Mine has got four WD Red 4tb drives (also recommend) in a RAID 6 configuration for ultimate redundancy. If a drive goes out, hot swap it with an identical replacement on the fly and it fixes itself. I have a spare drive brand new in the box just in case.
It's a real beast and I love it. I have a Synology 710+ as well. I did a lot of research on NAS and this is one is faster than almost all of its competitors. I would buy them all over again.

Question 2

For the owner complaining of noise, how many drives do you have installed and what make/model are they?  Do you have the NAS sitting on your desk?

I'm not the person who complained about noise, but I own this unit and don't find it noisy at all.  I have 2 WD Red 8 TB drives in mine and it sits on a shelf about two feet away from my head.  Once in a while I hear quiet drive warble (these drives make the kind of soft "chunk" sound) and 99% of the time I don't hear any sound at all.

Question 3

Description says 1 NIC. Photo and mfr. say 2 NICs. Please clarify, is it one or 2? I need 2 NICs... if this truly has only one, I'll have to return it at your cost.

I have one and in does indeed have 2 NIC's. Awesome unit. I have had a smaller 2disk unit onlline for 4 years 24/7 and it has not skipped a beat. You won't be disappointed with the DS916+. Hope this helps.

Question 4

Thank you kindly to all who answered. A couple final questions, before I pull the trigger:
I'd like this to serve mainly as a media server, for both home and to allow use when I'm on the road. Is this a good model for this reason? I also want the ability for anyone in the house to be able to watch mp4 and mkv's from any device. Again, is this the solution I'm looking for? Finally, it would also be used as a generic backup solution for all the laptops and desktops in the house. Good choice?

Works great for serving mp4 files within the house, I've not tried it outside the house -- but I expect your network connection and not this server will be your limit.

It works just fine for backups.  Its software is a bit finicky, but appears to work -- and you can always use whatever backup software you like.

Question 5

What with mulit-terabyte SSDs drive prices in the stratosphere makes creating a a so-equipped NAS unreasonable for all but the most well-heeled. That will surely change however, recalling GB drives once costing as much. What is the suitability of this NAS to accommodate SSDs?

Currently SSD drives are 10 times the cost of a comparable hard drive. There will be 3 generations of NAS's before SSD prices drop to current hard drive levels. The 916 is not the NAS you will then put a SSD into. As to your question the 916 uses a standard SATA connector. If the SSD uses a standard SATA connector and is the same form factor as a hard drive it should work.
