Exactly what I wanted 9/29/2020 1:30:38 AM

Overall Review: This is my first NAS and I went back and forth on the decision for a while. In the end I’m happy with my purchase. It gave me great confidence that it detected a bad drive right away, that’s pretty cool.

Media apps - not the best experience 9/26/2020 10:00:42 PM

Overall Review: I am a first time user of a NAS device at home and of Synology DSM software. It's been a couple of months since I setup the device so these are still some preliminary observations of a first time user:
Despite all the hype around Synology NAS software as super easy to use (a major factor in my decision to go with Synology than QNAP), my experience has not been that smooth.

My primary use case was to be able to sync up photos and videos across various devices and stream them onto TV and mobile devices. This hasn't worked well. Apparently to use Synology media apps like Photo Station, Moments, Video station etc., you need to first copy all your media into some specific folder, otherwise they don't work! This is so cumbersome. I now need to give up all my file organization strategy and move them over to a Synology designated folder This approach is so different from any other popular photo/media library app where you can specify the location of your media files and the app can scan and index files.
Reading through the posts, there was some suggestion to use symlinks and mount the folders. Even that didn't work. And that's another observation: Synology community threads are not much help, I see quite a few questions unanswered or threads left open..

Even setting up Plex doesn't help much, it looks like such a bloatware with more focus on external digital contents like TV/movies rather than personal home media. Also the mobile app will require you to purchase license if you want to stream videos. Again, these are my observations as a novice user of the app, so maybe there are some ways to make it work which I don't know yet.

Coming to the basic function of centralized file storage, not much happiness there as well. On my Mac, the smb connection keeps dropping/re-connecting. I suspect maybe the wifi signal is to partly blame, but I don't get any major problem in my video/zoom calls, so wifi may not be a major factor. I did some configuration changes to prevent these connection drops (smb3/removed encryption etc), but not much improvement.
I will working at it for few more weeks, hopefully with time I get to resolve these issues.

The Synology NAS Rocks! 9/20/2020 6:02:39 AM

Pros: My DS220+ was easy to set up, and fast in operation. I use it as a data hub at home and access time is much faster than the Netgear RN212 (which died at 3 yrs of service) it replaced. I installed recommended drives (WD Pros) and transferred my files from an external backup to the NAS. It been running for just a few weeks and I’m tickled at the speed of file access. If I get the longevity I expect, I’ll add another egg!

Cons: None

Overall Review: I would recommend this to anyone looking for a server for their home or small business.

Great NAS for 1st timers 9/15/2020 8:35:21 AM

Pros: -Hardware and software setup is dead simple.
-Build is good and appreciate the plastic carriers to minimize noise.
-Using 2, 10TD WD Red drives (WD100EFAX, older model) the set up is QUIET.

Cons: -the front panel is held closed via rubber grommets and not sure of longterm "snugness"
-USB port in back could be better located. It's presently between the power connector and ethernet port thus requiring you to turn and see the port directly to connect a USB cable.

Overall Review: Truly happy I picked this model to initiate me to the world of NAS. Synology has abundant info and support and online YT videos are available to help you.
One huge kudos to Newegg for the fantastic packaging of the drives and the NAS; keeping everything safe.

Works great with proper setup, assuming you can find instructions you're looking for 9/3/2020 8:17:49 AM

Pros: Newest model (as of this date)
Link aggregation (and ability to mimic if not supported by your router with "Adaptive Load Balance")
SSD cache slots
DSM OS and suite of apps
Expandable RAM
Newegg able to supply all components quickly, with great packaging, no issues detected to date.
Moment backup of mobile device photos/videos

Cons: Instructions not intuitive for beginner low/intermediate users, have to dig for info or google
Need hardware upgrades to maximize functionality
Inability to migrate oldest DSM systems
No standard "Public" folder
wish it had a more powerful CPU (with other upgrades installed)

Overall Review: My 720+ is a replacement for a DS211j setup back in 2011 that was ending DSM upgradability and hardware (processor/RAM) being overwhelmed. I am using my NAS in a personal/family setting. So I have familiarity with Synology and DSM and would classify myself as low intermediate level knowledge user for perspective when considering this review. I have spent some time getting things setup and running properly and have taken my time to make sure its getting done right, including the research before purchase.
The Setup:
(2) WD Red Pro 6tb 7200rpm 256mb cache 6gb/s in Raid 1
(1) Samsung 970 EVO 500gb SSD cache (MZ-V7S500B/AM) (note read only see below)
G.Skill Ripjaws 4GB DDR4 2666 (PC4 21300) (F4-2666C18S-4GRS)
802.3AD Link Aggregation to Asus ROG Rapture GT-AC5300
Arris SB8200 modem
So far I've had no problems with this setup just a matter of figuring out how to get everything setup properly. Also I installed the SSD cache and 4GB Ram prior to initial startup of the 720+. The Samsung SSD was on the approved synology list for the 720+. I debated between that SSD and a prior samsung model and 250gb models, but this was more bang (capacity and speed) for slightly more buck ($13 more). One thing I didn't realize until setup was that if you want a read/write cache you need to have 2 SSD sticks, 1 stick will only do read cache. Also note that the size of your cache (per GB) will require a reserve of your RAM. This 500gb cache took approx. 200mb of RAM, so keep in mind R/W will double that reserve. Not a problem for me since I upgraded the RAM from the start. Regarding RAM, some have noted issues with a Crucial so I took a $20 educated gamble and went with this G.Skill which seemed to match all specs of the Synology RAM including non-ECC and has slightly lower latency than the Crucial. So far so good. I can see where those without these upgrades (RAM and SSD cache) and lower performance tier HDD (rpm, cache) would run into performance issues. Pretax this setup came in around 880 with a couple promos. Everything arrived in one shipment and was well packaged and protected via Newegg.
Link Aggregation setup took a little figuring out with my GT-AC5300 router. Note turn off link aggregation on the router until after it is setup and turned on in in the 720+ otherwise the 2nd LAN port won't be recognized. Since my router supported AD link aggregation I'm setup in that mode. As a side note there is a synology "adaptive load balance" link aggregation mode that allows link aggregation even if not directly supported by your router. Once I had the bonded 2gb link setup and running I immediately noticed the difference
Performance
As my prior 211j couldn't follow the direct migration protocol and I wasn't going to move my 9yo HDD's I had to transfer everything over. Biggest issue with transfer of course was photo/videos. This wasn't an issue for the RAM/connection/HDD but did put significant load on the CPU (which at this point is the weak link internally) which initially had me freaked out based on experience of others. Transfer of 60,000+ photos and 10,000+ videos caused the CPU to run at 99% for about 2.5 days to process, tag, etc. I will say later backup of 17,000 photo/video for 1 iphone through moments took about 8 hours for transfer on 5ghz AC and then an overnight 99% CPU run to process, tag, etc. on the 720+ itself. The task manager app showed exactly what was going, and after, everything was back to normal with CPU. I was still able to access the 720+ thru DSM & had use of other apps. I have to believe the improved performance I'm getting compared to others is a direct result of my upgraded setup RAM, SSD, high perf. HDD, link aggregation. I'm less concerned about the CPU now that I'm thru that process. My other bottleneck is of course my ISP, my current ISP package only provides 10mb/s UPLOAD capacity (200-300mb/s download), depending on how things go may look at a higher speed ISP package. Question is how long will this NAS setup last?, hoping to get 8 years similar to prior model, considering this is top of the line 2 bay model.
If you're considering what NAS to buy & planning to use your NAS for photo and more so video streaming/remote access & backup then you need to forget those low level base models, the 720+ is what you want (as far as 2 bay models go) keep in mind you will also need to spring for some upgrades. But then again if you are buying the 720+ for those add-on capabilities you might as well put them to use.
For those with little to no NAS experience Synology and DSM is user friendly, but you have to dig to find the right info. User guide just tells you to go look under DSM help and you have to install apps before their DSM help files show up. I would have hoped that by now DSM would have come closer to an "Apple/ios" like intuitive experience but it seems like you have to dig more now to find info than you did a few years ago. That being said it's still one of the best NAS OS out there.

If you don't have a Synology NAS, you are completely missing out 8/25/2020 8:52:02 AM

Pros: DSM is the bomb
Run VMs
Run Docker Containers
Scale your storage
Integrated Plex server
SHR
SSD (m.2) read/write cache
RAM expandable to 20GB (reliably)

Cons: Expensive but you get what you pay for

Overall Review: The DS920+ is an awesome NAS. I coupled mine with the DX517 expansion unit because I wanted the horsepower of the DS920+ with the expandability of the 1618. While rather expensive, I couldn't be happier in the end.

I have decommissioned all my other (toy) NAS / DAS units. My media collection has been consolidated and extended to my Android TV. I have DNS over TLS and DHCP running in a Docker container to keep big brother at bay. An Ubuntu VM hosts Parrot Sphinx with Ralink USB Wi-Fi adapter bound to it for supporting my software development efforts.

Expanding the RAM is a breeze. Match the speed / specs of the soldered 4GB NANDs and you can comfortably add an additional 16GB. I've been running with 20GB for about a month now with zero issues.

I started with a RAID-5 array of 4 4TB WD Reds. I added the dx517 and pieced together an assortment of drives on it with varying capacity to create an SHR-2 array. I then broke the original RAID-5 array and added those drives to the new SHR-2 array. Then over the next couple weeks I swapped out the lower capacity drives I threw together to make the SHR-2 array with bigger drives to raise my total usable storage to about 22 TB.

Love love love this thing!
