I have a Synology DiskStation DS3617xs...can I back everything up to this unit then do any software upgrades to the DS3617xs. I have a 12 drive RAID 6 with data protection - 127TB storage...it always says to backup the system before DSM upgrades or a file system defrag - I have been too scared(!). Copying the data back and forth would probably sort the defrag....despite RAID 6 it would give me a bit of peace having another backup...anyway can I shift the data here and then upgrade the DSM without worry?

No, this is not a stand alone NAS nor does it run its own DSM.  It's basically a DAS, it attaches to a primary NAS and is managed by the same DSM.  If a DSM update fails or the primary NAS fails, the shelf is not accessible.  For your use case, you would need a second stand alone NAS.  If both NAS are Synology, then you could run Shared Folder Sync between the two which uses rsync to backup the data.  I am using this attached to a DS2419+ with two 6 disk SHR1 volumes and it works nicely to expand the storage.
