From the picture, it looks like when the microSD card is in the adapter, it covers the lanyard hole. Is that correct, or can a lanyard still be attached when the microSD card is inserted?

Correct. However there is a 1/64" flat recess on the side facing the microSDHC (about 1/2 of 1/32" on my tape measure, and I have tired old eyes). So, if you are handy with tools, you could flatten one end of a small paper clip - you would have to be good, here, and shape it into something to attach whatever. The challenge is to not overstress the bends and crack or break the metal on something so thin. Woundn't it be nice if Team Group offered such an accessory. I don't know of any. you could try a search. Sometimes I'm amazed at what I find out there!  Good luck.

will this fit an lg p870?

According to LG's website, it supports up to a 32gb micro SD card, so this should work without a problem.
