Question 1

I presently use my laptop display and an external ASUS monitor through my laptop's VGA output. Will this device allow me to use three (3) displays extending my desktop to triple the width? Or will I still be limited to two as i've seen in the past when trying to use display port and vga ports. Thanks!

I'm using one of these adapters with my Dell notebook and an ASUS monitor.  I have the notebook display, the ASUS and a Viewsonic monitor all working together. The Viewsonic is connected through the Dell's HDMI port. This is very similar to what you want to do so it should work fine but of course there isn't any way to really know without trying.

Does this product work on windows 8.1?

Yes, it will work. But always run a test before trying to present. On my Dell XPS 18 the projection is not a mirror of the desktop. That's a driver problem that Dell has yet to fix.
But this device will work with Windows 8.1.

The end of the monitor chord is different than the one I received is there still a way to make it work?

...doesn't really work.  resolution on this monitor is worse than before.  guess I am looking for an external graphics card...don't waste your $

Does it produce surround sound via HDMI? Is it HD Audio?

Yes - this allows full HDMI connectivity - HD video, and HD Audio given the computer it is used with can feed these signals.  I have been using for over a year now with a Surface Pro. I have a USB 3 hub plugged into the single USB port on my surface and then I plug this adapter into the hub - along with external hard drive, ethernet adapter, and thumb drive.  No compromise on video or audio quality.  Would recommend - no surprises here.

Yes absolutely the hdmI is composed of both sound and video. This guy connects over USB so you should have no problem with sound so long as all the proper drivers are installed!

Hey all, I am trying to connect this with a VGA monitor. It doesn't seem to work with VGA. When I tried with my DVI monitor to see if it worked at all, it worked fine. So can this do VGA???

The signal tossed out by this adapter is strictly digital. HDMI and dvi are both digital signals, so those will work. VGA is analog, so no signal will be output for VGA connections. Sorry!

I don't believe so - this is a single HDMI port.  Because it is USB you could add 6 of these - one for each monitor.
