Does this switch keep the connections alive? IOW, if I use it for external HDD, do I have to go through "Safe To Remove" on windows every time I press the switch? Thanks.

Unfortunately it does not, however I don't have to safely remove my external hard drive. If you find that you normally need to safely remove the HD before unplugging, then it might be a pain. I use it for switching a mouse and keyboard between two separate computers, so it works fine for this. I do have a Toshiba external hard drive as well, and I haven't had an issue with just unplugging it without ejecting, so this would likely work fine with this switch too. Hope this helps

connected through ubs 2? or dvi ? ?

Greetings, This is a USB switch, and not for DVI. I used it to connect two PCs to a broadband modem. I might add that mine stopped working after about a month. Hope this helps.
