is the fan on the cooler replaceable, and if so how??

Yes. There is a Phillips head screw in each of the 4 corners of the fan that hold it on to housing/adapter that is connected to the aluminum heat sink itself.

So, looking at the picture, there are 3 pieces: 
- The fan (black) with the wires hanging out
- The housing/adapter (black) & 
- The heat sink (silver).
 
Then there's the "clip mechanism" (sliver) that clips on to both sides of the plastic adapter that's connected to the Motherboard with screws or plastic pins. The "clip mechanism" is spring aluminum, so that it clamps on the adapter/motherboard firmly & holds the heat sink/CPU cooler assembly tightly in place.

All that said, the one I bought didn't even last 2 years & the fan seized up & almost over heated my CPU. Replacement fans are hard to find & cost about the same as this whole setup, so I think I'll buy a different setup this time. I've built other PCs with AMD processors & I used the "Arctic Alpine GT" that I bought here on Newegg (I buy almost all my computer parts from this site). It's actually a buck cheaper than this one, SUPER quiet, got a 6 year warranty, can do your laundry... Wait, I got carried away there. Sorry. No laundry. It IS WAY nicer all the way around though. It's got a plastic housing/clip system that holds it down & a 4 wire fan, so the fan speed can be variably configured in the BIOS too. This one only has 3 wires, so it's limited. I've bought a couple of these Thermaltake Coolers & they just don't hold up. Sorry...

Do a search for the "Arctic Alpine GT" on this site & see what it looks like. It substitutes/replaces the this one & the rating on each of these & tells the story. . .

Does anyone know how to connect this to the CPU? This is my first complete build, and I don't want to screw it up. Does the sticky pad just go straight onto the CPU?

It just sits on top of the CPU and doesn't actually "connect" to it. It connects to the plastic bracket around the CPU. It should line up so it is centered with the CPU so the thermal paste on the bottom helps it get a good connection between the heatsink and the CPU.

If you are running at stock speeds, it will cool better than an older stock unit. This is not meant in any way shape or form for overclocking, which would be the only reason you would buy a "k" sku.
