One heck of a tough laptop 3/14/2013 2:11:05 PM

Pros: Bought this in Nov of 09 and its been through the works including droped once hard and its has worked flawlessly the whole time I have owend it. Came with Windows 7 and I added Kubuntu linux which I use 90% of the time it has run perfectly with no issues. Laptop came with Nvidia graphics witch also worked great in linux. based on my use of this product I would not hesitate to buy another Toshiba laptop again. my 15 year old daughter is now using it for online school everyday.

Cons: Dont like the placment of cooler fan underneath and exhaust outlet but thats just my complaint and not really a problem.

Overall Review: I have a toshiba TV witch has lasted long to ... almost too long, I am waiting for it to go bad so I can upgrade it to a new led one LOL !
Toshiba makes some really good tech based on my ownership. I would recomend this brand no problems

Solid Long-Term Performance 2/17/2011 4:13:32 PM

Pros: -Relatively cheap (if you can still find it)
-Extremely stable (mine is used for traveling IT repair and has been through a lot without any problems whether running Win7 or Ubuntu)
-Linux-friendly (I've installed and reinstalled the various Ubuntu versions with little issue -- other than the one mentioned below. You can get it up and running with very little custom setup. Noob-friendly.)

Cons: -Flimsy USB mounts on right side (applying downward pressuring on an attached USB can easily break/shift the mounts)
-Runs hot in modern video games (not surprising, considering it's age and hardware)
-The onboard sound is very weak. (the ALC272 is not up to most gaming applications in Windows. It doesn't play as nicely with Ubuntu as the rest of the hardware does. For anyone using 10.04 or later, this soundcard will play all sounds normally, but with noticeable sound quality loss. Also, the microphone input is poor through Mumble)

Overall Review: All in all, a very good computer for "real" work and goofing off on the 'net. It isn't a gaming rig for anyone looking for high-res settings on anything after TF2 and L4D. Great for a college kid, or like me, a traveling IT repair/interweb junkie.

On a side note, my laptop will be one year old tomorrow. Happy birthday laptop!

Don't Buy Toshiba 3/30/2010 12:31:46 PM

Pros: Worked great for three months.

Cons: During the third month of owning this laptop the charge cable stopped making a connection and won't charge the battery. After speaking with Toshiba about this with their technical support they have informed me that I will have to pay $200-500 in order to get this fixed. This is a completely useless notebook now and after only three months Toshiba is saying that their warranty will not cover it.

Overall Review: Don't waste your money or time on any Toshiba notebook. Their tech support and warranty coverage are worthless. They sell inferior products so they can charge a high price to have them work like they should. I have purchased many notebooks throughout the years; Acer, ASUS, HP, Dell , and others. No other brand has such horrible products. Talk about wasting money.

Good value, big machine 2/18/2010 1:39:14 PM

Pros: Power/$. This machine can run all of my games at high settings (Civ IV complete, Mass Effect, Borderlands), though the frame rates aren't always perfect.

Nice, big screen.

Full keyboard with number pad.

Wifi adapter works better than any other laptop I've ever had.

Cons: The thing is BIG. Check the dimensions before buying. It isn't light, either.

The keyboard feels kind of cheap.

No separate area for scrolling with the touch pad. You can scroll, but you have to guess where the correct part of the pad is. Some people may prefer this.

Battery life is only around an hour running games from the HDD at full settings.

Lots of bloatware.

Overall Review: The power/$ ratio makes this a good purchase for me, but it won't be right for everyone.

Outstanding 3D performance 2/17/2010 7:43:22 AM

Pros: Plays great games with no lags at all. Tried Call of Duty - MOD2, LOTR, LOTRII, Dragon Age - Origins, The Sims 3, CS-Source with no problems. Works very well with 3D Studio Max too!
The machine does not heat up so much compared to my HP.
Excellent performance in multi-tasking.
The machine itself is rock solid compared to my HP.
For me, this is definitely a perfect desktop replacement.
With this beast plus the price? It's almost unbeatable ;)

Cons: A 250GB hard drive is not enough for this beast. But I don't mind that.

Great Laptop 2/15/2010 9:17:53 AM

Pros: This is a beautifully performing laptop with a great graphics card. I can run Halo 2 full quality (that is the only game I have installed as of now). Gorgeous image when extended via HDMI to my 52" tv. It has a fast wlan card; it connects in only a few seconds. The boot speed is great. The speakers are very nice. There was not too much bloatware. It has a number pad.

Cons: Speakers squeal while booting. The touch button shortcuts beep really loudly. HUGE mousepad buttons are hard to miss. (only a con because they are ugly, but it could also be a pro) Hard drive could be bigger, but you can buy an external drive. That is why they have an eSATA port.

Overall Review: Newegg processed my order and had it shipped within the hour. UPS delivered right on time. Don't let the cons scare you, this is definitely a great computer. The price is great for the quality. Windows 7 feels strange; it is very boxy. It is ugly, however it is efficient. I changed the look to an appearance that was similar to xp. I read that you can't remove aero, this is wrong, it is just harder to do.

Very nice computer in all regards. 2/11/2010 5:15:19 PM

Pros: Graphics Card is amazing for any computer, not just laptop. GeForce GT 230M w/1gb dedicated memory. Processor-Duo 2.2 Very good at handling multiple tasks at once without any hiccups. Great for games, ran ME, ME2 Bioshock [1 & 2], Empire Total War all on high settings (not the highest, but high) with very little texture problems or screen tearing. Does not get too hot after extended gaming. Solid construction, great keyboard, great speakers. Screen is awesome without any pixels DOA. Windows 7 is a solid OS. Power saving feature is great and easily customizable. A VERY fast connecting wifi adapter. My wife has another version on a Toshiba Satellite and it takes forever to connect to a wifi connection after booting up/sleep/hibernation...this one takes literally three seconds, very nice.

Cons: Alittle heavy on bloat programs to boot, but that is how Toshiba does their laptops and are very easily removed. Battery life is very poor for gaming, videos etc and extra options for more juice are ridiculously priced. I always have mine plugged in at home but not all people would be okay with this. Touch based volume strip at the top beeps very loud, especially with headphones, can sometimes pull you out of gaming experience/movie, but not a deal breaker by any means.

Overall Review: Average start-up, in about two minutes from button press to home screen without any waiting to load what you want. It is a dust/fingerprint magnet, but that does not bother me. Not a big fan of the mouse pad, but I just added a usb laser mouse for my gaming.

Great notebook! 2/4/2010 11:22:30 AM

Pros: I picked this laptop out for my friend and I am very impressed.

After a fresh windows 7 install the drivers were easy to find from Toshiba. The build quality is fantastic, especially the keyboard. The dedicated video card works great for gaming. No you will not be able to play Crysis on max settings, however less graphically demanding games, such as Mass Effect 2, will run maxed out without a hiccup.

Cons: Only a 250gb HDD. A little bulky for my taste but you should expect that with a 16" display.

Overall Review: I would recommend this for anyone looking for a larger versatile notebook with good gaming capabilities.
