does this work in place of the ethernet cable?

This is a wireless network adapter. If your router has wifi built in, then yes. Please check the wireless protocols on your router to make sure it supports what this uses- 11ac, 11n, or 11a.

Will this work for a windows 10 desktop that supports miricast but has no wifi card installed?

Yes, it works w W10 and w/out a WiFi card installed. I have no knowledge of miricast so must decline offering any info or advice on this aspect. However, this dongle is inexpensive and very impressive - in terms of connecting solidly and maintaining a robust connection - even with a moderate to weak signal. I was pleasantly surprised.
