Question 1

Will it work if the wall plug is a two wire (i.e., no ground) system?  House is '53 so its not groundable.   Related: do the two ends have to be on the same circuit breaker?

Accepted Answer

The device has only a 2-prong plug so ground pin is not relevant.  Two ends need not be on the same circuit breaker but if the house is wired for 120/240, the two ends may need to be on the same set of 120V breakers otherwise the signal may not make it to the outdoor transformer and back down the 2nd 120V side.  Bridge devices can be obtained to bridge the two 120V sides although that's adding to the complexity.

Question 2

If this is plugged into the top outlet, will it block the bottom outlet?

You could choose to plug it into the top outlet right side up or the bottom outlet upside down and the other outlet is not blocked.  The plug is non-polarized so it goes in either way.

Can you hook up a wi-fi router to this on the other side?

Yes, the units basically act as an ethernet extender to the devices on either ends and an extended switch when more than 2 units are deployed/utilized.

What is the benefit of having two ethernet ports on the source side?

Having two ethernet ports on the device allows you to connect two hardwired devices (computer, notebook, TV, etc...) on the end unit to the home network.  The caveat is the connection to your home router can only be on one port, so the one that is connected to the router has a "backup" port available... Nice to have just in case one of the ports goes down.
