So does this provide extra ethernet ports for me when I run out of open ports on my router ? So do I hook up one cable from this to the router ?

This is merely a 16 port gigabyte switch.  You will lose one of the 16 ports that will be the source/input while the other 15 become outputs.  You will also lose a port on the source device.  You don't need to use a crossover ethernet cable with this switcher.  You will also lose a port on the source device.  I have a U-verse vDSL modem with 4 port router.  By adding the 16 port switch, I went from 4 ports up to 19 effective ports.

what kind of cooling is inside the case? Is there a fan or is it passive cooling?

I do not see, feel, or hear any kind of fan or air flow through case.  I would say it is passive, through vents in both sides and back of case.

Are the rack mount angles included with the SG1016? Can it be installed in a rack cabinet without any additional accessories?

Yes the rack angles are included. Also comes with little rubber feet if you want to set it in a cabinet. Very nice switch. I've been using it for over a year now . Never had a single issue. Gives me full gigabit speeds over cat6 for streaming movies and transferring files to and from my file server.

Does this have PoE ports? if yes, how many?

This unit has no POE ports, and no management.  It is very low cost for its functions, and to my great liking, has no internal fan to make noise and suck dust into the unit.  We have one in service, and have been happy with it.

Does this product provide PoE (power over ethernet)?

Nope, truly strictly a switch, make sure you get a proper router for it since it is unmanaged

Does this unit have one or more cooling fans and are they quiet?

It has a fan and is quiet enough for a home/business office environment but perhaps too noisy for a home theater.  It has a noise level comparable to a low powered desktop computer.

will this work in a standard rack mount server case?

Accepted Answer

The unit comes with 19" rack mount "ears" ( flush to front panel) -- these 'ears' can be rotated 90degree for an under- table mount ( which is not mine is presented mounted)

The unit  is light enough not to require rear support (rail) or a tray.  Depending on the offset of the rack (cabinet) mounting rails, assuming sufficient space is provided for cable bends, this should  fit in a rack nicely

How much power does this use? I'm trying to choose components for a small form factor, energy efficient micro data center.

My switch uses 14 Watts of power.  I currently have 10 devices connected to it.

Sorry it took so long to answer but I had to disconnect it and plug it into a Kill-A-Watt meter to get a real world answer.

Will this have any problem connecting Linux based computers, specifically Ubuntu?

I haven't had any issues with them using BSD-based firewalls or Linux servers.  Our company has a few of these scattered around and never had an issue.

how loud is the fan?

I have it on my desk and i personally cannoty hear the fan so i would say inaudible.
