Is it possible to change the WPA2 password?  I do not want to use the default password.

YES! Do not use the automatic configuration utility. Login to the router with the default ID and password, (usually admin/admin), and configure the router manually. You can set your own network name, change the router address from the default of 192.168.1.1, and if you're an advanced user and also paranoid, you can also subnet the router and only allow access to just MAC addresses that are your devices.

I have Centry Link Service.
Do I need a modem to use this router?
My service is in the basement. Do I need an extender to use up stairs  thta could be 40 feet from the router

Yes.. you will need the modem, it is only a router. The internet signal is coming from the modem. I have my modem and this router setup on the first floor, and I have no problems for my devices to receive the signal. But if I were you, I will not set it up in the basement, try to set up them up in the middle floor or the middle of your house, then you have a better chance to get good signal around your house.

Question 3

Does this router support IP address reservation, and port forwarding?  If it does support port forwarding, is it possible to specify an external port number that is different from the TCP port number of the app that the forwarding is directed to?

Is this compatible with Cox Internet?

Accepted Answer

I don't see why it wouldn't be.  This is a router though, not to be confused with a modem.  You'll need a modem ( which Cox would provide you with ) to connect to the internet.  Then you would connect your modem to your TP-Link router.

Check with Cox to see if they will provide you with a modem that is able to be used with a router via ethernet.

can I plug a telephone into this router?

No, no unless you have a Telephone connector box. Or a IP telephone.

Will this router work with a Mac desktop computer?

Of course. It's a router/switch so it's completely independent of whatever you plug into it. If your device supports TCP/IP it will work with this. Management of the router is via a webpage, so if your device has a browser, it will work.

My technician just installed your WRD3500 router on my MacBook Pro. By mistake I recycled the extra Invax Data Cable Cat 5 he gave me to allow him to reset or adjust my router on line w/o his driving an hour.

That is just a standard cat.5 cable. You can pick one up at a local store or online for pretty cheep.

Question 8

Does anyone have specs on the usb speed? Would it be feasible to use the usb as a media server and stream movies to different devices in my home? Of course the wifi can handle it, but I'm concerned about the usb speed due to the cpu bottleneck

Didn't use the USB in that manner.  I had a pc hooked up directly and it was fine.  But I would guess, depending on the type of file you're streaming (mkv maybe) it may stutter.  I've experience that lag with something hooked to the pc usb which is why I say that.

can I connect a wireless router or modem to a hdtv ..the tv is not a smart  tv  but is an hdtv. in doing so will this make the tv a wieless tv   ???

No.  To be able to broadcast to your TV from a device, you would need a device such as chrome cast or such if your TV is not wireless already.
