Is is easily compatible with AppleTV, etc? I'm sure it'll work, but I would rather not have to jump through flaming hoops to get it to function if i can avoid it.

It is compatible with my roku and also my DVD player which has streaming functions (Amazon, netflix, etc). I don't own apple TV but I can't imagine it's that different.

Question 2

I have comcast/cable service to my home, does it even matter?

It matters in that this is not a replacement for your cable modem (i.e., you still need your cable modem).

To use this with your comcast service, you will probably want to run an ethernet cable from the output of the cable modem to the "WAN" port on this.

You may have to use the "MAC cloning" functionality of the router to trick your cable modem into thinking that the router is your current computer (the one which activated your comcast modem). This was the case with my comcast service, not sure if that's a stupid thing they do everywhere.

Will this work with a DSL modem?

It works great with my Motorola SB5101U Cable Modem. I am will pleased with TP-Link TL-WR940N Wireless as well.

Not a modem of any kind. It is a router, wired and wireless.

Can this be set up for use with VPN?

There are 2 questions you could be asking here and the answer to both is yes.  
1.  If you are planning to connect to a vpn on your computer while connected to this router there is a "vpn passthrough" setting that is enabled by default.
2. If you want to connect this router directly to a vpn (so that any computer connected to the router is on the vpn all the time); it will do it, but not easily.  There is no direct setting to do so, you would have to set this up in the advanced routing settings manually.  This is not easy.

Will this work with my windows 8 computer?

Yes it does, just make sure you use WPA2 or WEP and you should have no trouble. Windows 8 is finicky with WPA sometimes.

If you're asking this to make it work with dd-wrt - this is the new version that many had issues getting it to work with dd-wrt.  I actually bricked mine because the compatibility isn't there.

if your browser is in a homegroup in your network settings , and your router is in that homegroup , you are able to view and change router functions while not internet connected.
