Looked up the 2017 Air; it appears that it has the conventional-sizerd USB, so yes this will work. The difference you'll have to look for with current equipment is the type of USB port it has. USB-C is physically much smaller.

I can confirm it works without issue on windows 10. As for Ubuntu, I have not personally tested.
