Will these work with win7 and winxp?

I have this installed on two machines; One is running WinXP and one is running Vista.  Both required the included CD to install.  When I put the CD in I closed the pop up window for installing and did it manually from the System screen, but I am sure it will install easily from the disc.

what is this used for?

The is wi-fi (wireless internet/home network) receiver dongle. Can be used to bridge wi-fi from your wireless router to a laptop or desktop computer. For example, my laptop wireless card was not compatible with my new router from the cable company. I plugged this into an open usb port, and within 10min my laptop was wirelessly connected to my home network and thus the internet. Alternately, if you don't want or have the ability to have an ethernet cable plugged in to your desktop computer, this dongle will allow your desktop to attach wirelessly to the internet. It is about 1/2 the size of most usb flash drives, so it would not be the safest idea to leave in the laptop should you move the laptop around a lot.

is it compatible with a dell pc with windows xp?

If it uses Windows XP, yes it will work.  The operating system is what is important, not the computer type, since almost all windows PCs use the same architecture.  I have one of these USB wireless dongles set up on an e-machines PC using XP and it was very simple to set up with the included CD.  It works FAR better than the D-link 802.1g one I replaced it with.

Compatible with Windows 8?

Yes it is, I used it on a win8 machine for about a week until I got a wire into my basement.  I don't remember if Win8 loaded drivers (I think so) or if I had to load them from the driver disc.

Does this product work with any router or only TRENDnet?

This product is a wifi network adaptor, it's made to connect to a wide range of routers that use wireless networking protocols.  So to simply answer your question, yes.  I've never used a trendnet router in my life.  Most are Netgears.  - Pat

I can't say for sure as I'm using it on a windows 7 computer but the box states System Compatibility is win7,vista,xp and even 2000. I would recommend buying it because for the price its worth it.
