Will this plug into a standard phone line connection?

Yes. This is a modem and router combo. If you have DSL service by most providers this takes the DSL out of your phone line and hands it internally to its own router. You then can connect wired and wireless devices to the router

The specs say this has an on/off button for each of the 2.4 and 5 GHz frequencies. Can both be turned on (and work) simultaneously?

Yes. Both 2.4 and 5 GHz signals are turned on by default. While configuring it to work with your ISP, you'll only need to change the preset WAN passwords and SSIDs for each signal (if you prefer to assign your own).

Anybody know if this works with ATT uVerse? Need a modem that has better than the 'b' wireless, and the ATT modems are junk. Please let me know.

I have no idea about the AT&T uverse specifically, but as long as at&t uverse is vdsl2/adsl2+, you will be fine. I have century link vdsl2, and I had to call them to get the login info and some port info to get it setup correctly. Once I did everything properly, it worked.

Yes, this unit is backwards compatible with 802.11n, however I have noticed that with my unit it needs to be rebooted on a semi regular basis. you may have better results with a separate modem and wifi.

Can this item alone replace the stock gateway I am forced to rent from Xfinity/Comcast?

No, this modem does not have a Docsis cable modem on it. What you are looking for is probably something from Netgear or some other company like that. Make sure it at least is Docsis 3.0, the higher the better.

can it be used as a simple modem with my existing wireless router?

You should be able to do that. If you can set it to bridge mode from the adminstratve web application, you can connect the two via an ethernet cable, and it will hand off routing to your unit. You cannot connect them via WiFi, it must be hardwire.

Not sure why you would want to do that with this unit, unless you aready have VDSL or VDSL2 service. You could buy a dedicated modem for much less and bridge it too.
