Question 1

Will this item work without using the monitor connections? I need a KM switch only (no video). I want to use a single keyboard/mouse and switch control between a desktop and a laptop - keeping the monitors separate.

(Some of the software-based solutions will not work because the computers are on two different networks.)

Hi Mr Brant,

Yes it does work even if you don't use the Monitor, I just tested it to make sure.

You do need to connect the two monitor cables that come with the device just on the KVM Switch end, on the other end of the cable you will get a VGA connector and a USB connector, using just the USB connector makes the MOUSE and KEYBOARD work with no problems.

Is this model compatible with Windows 8.1?

It is strictly a hardware device. It doesn't matter what OS you're running (Windows, Linux, even just BIOS). The "hub" (the device appears as a USB hub) does need to be detected in Windows in order for the keyboard and mouse to work, but Windows (any version including 8.1) will load generic USB drivers for it. Just be aware the first time you connect it, it may take Windows a minute or two to install the USB hub driver.

Will this work on a monitor that doesn't have a VGA connection, only USB and HDMI?  Thanks!

No video but you can share common sound and combo usb keybd- mouse to two computers using this. (What I do with my HDMI setup)

can I hook a laptop with usb only and a PC to this device?

You should be able to do this. The PC1 and PC2 cables have a USB and a VGA socket. The USB would give you a common connect for key board and mouse. The audio should be ok as well.

If you do not use the VGA ports for display, you will need to connect independent cables from your laptop and pc to your monitor inputs.

If I am playing music from 1 computer and games on the other computer can I hear sound from both machines at the same time?

It doesn't work like that. It switches you from one computer to the next. You cannot use both computers at the same time. If you have a heavy use, then the product only last 10 months

Will this transmit video and audio to display?

I had some problems with it, and I think that I sent it back.  I couldn't figure out why it was having problems.  I am not using it anymore, or I don't see it so I probably sent it back.  I loved the idea and SO BADLY NEED IT, but I just started remote-desktoping because it was giving so many problems trying to keep two machines right next to each other and using something like this to switch.

Can this device be used to control two computers with a wireless mouse and keyboard (Microsoft). If so will I need any cables that are not included in this kit?

Yes. I have used it with both Wireless keyboards and wireless mice - including keyboard and mice combos with one receiver. Just plug the USB receiver(s) into the KVM switch in the same USB ports that you would normally connect a hardwired mouse and keyboard. No cables required.

My keyboard is a PS/2. Can I use a PS/2 to USB adapter and have it work on this device?

Also...

My video card uses DVI-I. can anybody recommend a good DVI-I/VGA adapter to use here?

When I was using a PS/2 motherboard, I had to purchase a USB to dual PS/2 active converter cable (the converter has a cable for a keyboard and another for the mouse).  I then plugged the keyboard into the keyboard cable and left the mouse cable empty.  Doing this the keyboard worked fine.  These active converters are somewhat expensive, you may just want to purchase another keyboard.

I need one of these with more than two USB ports.  What do you suggest?

I have added a 4 USB hub to this and that works just fine.  I know everyone has Printers, speakers, mouse, keyboard, etc.. These KVM switches work pretty well.  Best Wishes.
