Is there a non permanent adhesive so I can remove the cable in the future?

The cable can be locked and unlocked with a key as often as you like. The small plate that glues on to the back of the ipad is permanent... otherwise it wouldn't be very secure.  It is also very thin, so I don't think it gets in the way very much.  I recommend putting the locking plate close to the top of the ipad so that when you put it down it tilts towards you a little.
