However, i think most tech sites only go by the 5686E one.

Can I use this faxmodem for connection to the internet WI FI or ethernet?

This will only connect you to the internet through a dialup connection, which is pretty rarely used anymore except in very rural areas.  If you are using it to connect to the internet you will only be able to get email and browse webpages.  You will not be able to watch netflix or youtube videos.  However, you can also use this device to send and receive faxes, which is what we use it for.

I am looking at this to replace an old Fax machine.  What I do not see on the description is the software interface between this hardware and what one uses on one's computer to manage incoming and outgoing faxes.  Does the unit come with software or does Newegg have other software it recommends for managing faxes?

Thank you for the response.  Having looked further, It seems that a basic software interface is available in Windows.  I also looked elsewhere on line and saw 2-3 programs that allow you to mimic an online solution like efax.  I was looking at this as a fax machine because I need basic fax capability but do not want to pay for a subscription which will be way more expensive over time than having an in house solution.

Sorry.... I do not know if Windows 10 works with this modem.
I use windows 7 with a Keyspan USB to serial port converter.

This my "go to modem". Very high qaulity! Works great with all the security equipment I have to connect to.

Depends on your hardware. If your computer has a serial port (RS-232), then yes. Windows will recognize this modem and configure it properly. But most computers shipping today no longer come with serial ports. Just USB. If this is your situation, You will need a USB-to-Serial converter (plus the appropriate cable) to get this device working.

Does this dial up modem will be used to connect a pbx at remote end? pbx make is alcatel OXO which has a inbuilt v34 analog modem.

I have been using these modems since they were created. There is nothing else like them for any line condition, any equipment. I have connected with Nortel PBXs, key systems, remote CDR boxes, etc. If your equipment won't work with this, you have defective equipment.
P.S. They last and stand the test of time like Stonehenge.
