Question 1

Do you need a video card that supports this ultra wide resolution?  I want to hook up a 16:9 display laptop to get wider display.

It will depend on the video card in the laptop. I won't bother if all you have is a VGA connection. Display port DVI or HDMI and a newer laptop should work. I would check the specs of the laptops video card.

Question 2

The description states this is a 2k monitor with a resolution of 2560 x 1080 (FHD).  2560 x 1080 is not 2k resolution.  I'm assuming the description is incorrect and this is actually just a standard HD monitor?
