Is it opaque or is the laser light visible?

The laser light is red, IF you turn mouse over you see it. Body is black and NO light comes thru the body unless you lift it up off pad. Hope this helps. (Mouse still going strong no problems as of 8-22-14)

What is the length of the cord?

it's roughly 54 inches long, give or take a couple of inches. best feature is that you can rest your finger on the Rt and left buttons without having the weight of the finger accidentally triggering the button. yet the buttons don't require an inordinate amount of pressure to trigger them. it's just right.

What is the purpose of the 3 buttons?

Well, two buttons are the left and right clicker, the 3rd is the middle scroll button.
