I'm confused, I know now that display port has sound. I know hdmi has sound.

Does this pass the sound from display port to hdmi?

Yes the sound aka audio is also sent through this adapter.... up to 8 channels and 24bit sound

Will this pass single from a display port on a HTPC to the HDMI input on my 4K tv? Or is it only one direction operation from HDMI in to Display port out?

It's a female HDMI connection to a male DisplayPort connection. I use the DisplayPort out on my graphics card to a standard male-male HDMI cable. One end plugs into the adapter, the other to the TV. So it's sending from the DisplayPort 1.2 connection out to an HDMI 2.0 connection.

Will this adapter allow me to connect a 3rd monitor to my AMD R7 370 card?

It depends. The display port should be the one  plugged into PC and HDMI cable would go to monitor. It will not work the other way around (hdmi out of PC to display port on monitor).

no, it works the other way around. male display port to female hdmi. What you're describing looks like you need a male hdmi/ female display port adapter.
