Question 3

Can I boot from a SATA CD/DVD drive connected to this card?   Or do I need to boot an OS (Windows) and load its drivers first, before I can access the CD/DVD drive?
  
I am interested in this card, because I see I can no longer buy a PATA CD/DVD drive, and though it might be a solution.

My computer was able to boot from any device that was connected to the SATA ports on the card, based on the Boot Priority that I set in the Motherboard's BIOS. (I was using an ASUS P4PEX (Pentium 4) motherboard.

or... you could do what I eventually ended up doing:  I bought some refurbished ASUS motherboards that had 4 or 6 onboard SATA connections.  And then I used Macrium Reflect Pro to restore an image of my OS to the new (different) motherboard.  It worked like a charm.  I used this method with both Windows XP and Windows 7 /8.  Tremendous difference when you use a motherboard that natively supports SATA drives.

Will this recognize a 3 TB hard drive?

I'm fairly certain it will. The only thing I could not get it to do is boot from a drive attached to this card.
