Does this unit function as a plug and playexternal CD read-write drive?

I think it is supposed to be able to do that, but every time I connect the USB cable the drive does not appear in My Computer. I have not tried to troubleshoot it beyond that.

Can you rip a cd from this and with the USB port copy it to my computer?

Yes. The copy is as good as the original. It should play anywhere. Put the original or the copy into the computer, and save it to a file or program.
