I want 4 handsets. Can a friend who wants only two give me his to use with my base unit or are these handsets only linked to the base units they come with?

Rex, as I understood it when I read the manual, the 2 extra handsets are expansion handsets.  They can be obtain from another phone system using the exact same model number.  Any extra handsets that you wish to add to your base can be programmed to do so.  Only the main handset is tied to the main console.

Rex, the answer to this is in the manual.  I think I may have also located it on the manufacturer's website.  I do not have the manual in front me but I did look it up in both places.  If you are asking this question before buying the product, consider visiting Panasonic's website and looking up the model.
