You have trusted Western Digital with your data for years, now they have made it easy to back up your entire network. The 2TB ShareSpace Network Storage System is a 4 bay storage solution with room for expansion. The 2x1TB drives are shipped in spanning mode though you can switch to RAID 0 or 1. RAID 5 is available if you populate the other 2 bays.
The ShareSpace has 3 USB 2.0 host ports. The 2 ports on the back are available for additional drives. The front port works in conjunction with a front panel button. Just plug in a flash drive, push the button and the data is transferred to the drive array.
The ShareSpace has a built in iTunes server so everybody on the network can enjoy the music. There is also an FTP server so friends or customers can log in and get the data that they need.
Pros: Low cost, low maintenance, decent performance, user friendly web interface.
Cons: Must use WD drives.
Overall Review: Most of my access to this device is over a wireless connection, so I can't say much about performance (RAID1 configuration). I have only 2 1TB WD green drives however I just ordered 2 more. If my rating changes with RAID5 configuration I'll update this post. One more thing: I trust it will keep my data intact - since I hooked it up (about a month ago) I have NOT needed to reboot/reset it - it's there when I need it.
Pros: Large storage capacity, easy to configure, "just works" (in most cases).
Cons: Claims Active Directory Support - but only for Windows Server 2003. It will not attach to any Domain running any version of Windows Server 2008.
Overall Review: WD has been great with their support regarding this issue.
Pros: Capacity, ease of use, quiet, low power consumption*, works well
Cons: USB one-touch backup feature is hit or miss, lack of customization.
Overall Review: I purchased the sharespace for use at home as I needed a file server running full time and on access demand for 3 laptops, 1 desktop, 2 360s, and a PS3, using low power, and quiet. Prior to this purchase I was using a loud desktop that kept the office warm, this unit has solved all those problems and given me exactly what I've needed. Its been good out the box. My only complaint is that I cant customize the thing (i.e. use Tversity instead of Twokney) but other than that I'm satisfied.
Pros: Nice size, decent software, AD support, works just fine in windows 7 and with server 2008. Good transfer speeds over a gig LAN
Cons: well, after adding some disks and builidng a raid 5 array that took 14 hours I started to move 2 TB of data to the array. it showed degraded after the data copy finished so I restarted the array from within the software.... and then it died!! a looping reboot with no power LED.... WD Support was good both level 1 and level 2. The agreed that it was dead. Now Newegg RMA is of course outstanding! So I am waiting on the new unit and hope to give it 5 stars assuming it lives....
Overall Review: NewEgg rocks! Thats all I have to say.
Pros: Sounds like a great device - a simple a quick solution
Cons:
What a disaster. Go to add the extra drives - No, only Western Digital drives will work. Buy a WD drive and configure for RAID 5. It takes 15 hours to format! 15 hours! Go to transfer data. Crazy slow. Try to move any real amount of data, hangs up every 100 Gb or so.
Completely unusable.
Pros: Very good SOHO NAS unit for the price. Quiet, reliable, functional.
Cons: Limited to 1 TB drives. USB ports are very slow - not worth using if transfering large amounts of data. Permissions can only be set in root folders, not on folders within folders.
Overall Review: Others commented on WD incompatibility with Win 7. I have two of these units and have no difficulty accessing them from Internet (via FTP) and from my LAN with XP-32, Vista-32 and Win7-64 PCs. Also, lag time in response (using WD Green drives) can be corrected by turning off power saving - HDD stanby mode under system tab.
Pros: This system looks great for my needs once it is Win 7 compatible
Cons:
I sent an email asking what Western Digital NAS systems are compatible with Windows 7. This is the response I got..."Thank you for contacting Western Digital Customer Service and Support.
I apologize for the inconvenience, unfortunately at this moment none of our NAS drives are compatible with Windows 7."
Overall Review: I'd love to buy one of their NAS drives, but will have to wait until they get Win 7 compatible.

Pros: I bought this 5 years ago and its still chugging along!
No disks have needed to be replaced yet.
Its up 24/7.
Dont fret the negative reviews as with all electronics the main issue lies between the chair and the keyboard!
I am a MCSE and this is the best purchase I have ever made.
The RAID 5 keeps my data safe and I already bought a extra drive in case one goes bad so it can rebuild itself.
Cons: Sometimes it takes awhile to spin up but I rather have that than drives going bad on me.
