How many people can be simultaneously connected to the device at once for uploading and downloading files?

Max no. of users: 512 for Samba, 800 for ADS
Max no. of user groups: 64 for Samba, 200 for ADS
Max no. of network shares:128
Supports up to 10 concurrent CIFS connections

I've had this for 1 1/2 years and it has been trouble free.  I was able to shut down my file server that I had previously used.

Question 3

with RAID 1 set as the default is the full 8TB usable or is it reduced to 4TB with mirroring?

Raid 1 will mirror the drives. That's the way I have mine set up. Gives you time (hopefully) to slap a new drive in if it crashes but it does cut your storage in half. Raid 0 gives you the full 8 Tb and is quicker due to striping the drives but no redundancy.

when using this remotely with a I pad or I phone can you search the drive for file by name? I have a order version of wd  my cloud that doesn't have the search function. I am considering upgrading.

No, you cannot as far as I can tell. I do not see that capability in WD's My Cloud software. Files can be seen in the folders of the drive.

what is the difference between the My Cloud EX2 and the My Book Live Duo?

With the my cloud ex2 you can have many users to connect to your device, you can share your device with a friend who has a similar device and share music or movies, and it automatically copy your storage to the second drive so if 0ne drive goes bad, you will still have your files stored on the good drive and can back them up when you replace your bad drive.
