Question 1

1) Do I need to download their software to configure the device (downloading an "app" is a universally terrible solution), or does it have a web server and configuration web page like a rationally designed appliance?

2) Can I access the files on the device over the network like a normal NAS, or is it restricted to using their "backup" software?

This is a very good unit.  Here's what I've found that should answer your questions:
1). The interface is web based.  No app needed.
2). You can access the files directly from Windows.  You can map the NAS if you'd like.  Again, no need to go through their software.
I did have a problem with the first unit I received.  It would not stay connected to the network.  However, after the RMA replacement arrived, it's been rock solid and performs perfectly.

Can the unit be connected directly to my computer, windows 10, via the USB port or is it strictly for connection to the LAN?

I asked that same question and couldn't find any instructions on how to connect it directly to the computer.  I believe it's a LAN only device.

Question 3

What type of hard drives come pre-installed in this?

The drives used are Western Digital Red Nas. Sadly, not the pro version.
