This can be used as a replacement in ANY machine that accepts a full 3.5" hard drive with SATA interface. This typically includes most Desktop and many all in one P/C's

This item is shown with a cover as usual, but it's being described as a "bare drive". So is it covered as the pictures show or open exposing the platters?

Nothing is exposed that shouldn't be. It's ready to install. It just doesn't come with any cables, screws, or anything else; just the drive itself.

I just purchased this drive and don't appear to have a power cable for it. I do have a sata cable. Can you tell me what type of power cable needs to be connected to this drive? Will this one work? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812119010

This is a barebone drive which means it doesn't come with any cables. You need a standard SATA power connector. If your power supply does not have any SATA power connectors or you're using them all you'll need a 4 pin molex To SATA converter cable.

Is this an advanced format drive?  (sorry if this has already been asked)  I have one of these in a Win 7 PC and it reports that it's not.  Build date on the drive I have is May 27 2012

I would go to Start>>right click on computer>> manage disk management.   And see if your drive is already installed.  If you're not seeing the HDD, then check your SATA connection.

If you see your HDD and it has a black marking, then you have to follow the wizard to format your HDD for use.

if you see you HDD in blue then your HDD is functioning normally.  Hope this helps and good helps.

What does the term "bare drive" mean?

Bare drive means only the drive. No cd, cables or anything that a hard  drive would come with. It will come bubble wrapped in a box. Most of the time all you will need is a sata cable and you're good.  Hope I helped

Not ideal, but could this drive be used as an external back up? Cons?

Sure. However.....do you have an enclosure already?......Is 500 GB enough? There might be other cheaper or more convenient options out there for backup. WD Blue drives work great for the average drive and average use. Using it for a backup is good as you would just be using it part-time to backup your data. Less stress on the drive....less chance of it breaking.

This HDD should be compatible with any desktop PC that has a motherboard and PSU with SATA connections.  This HDD will not fit into laptop computers.

All SATA 3 are said to be backwards compatible, so yes I would say this will work in a computer that only has SATA 2 controllers.
