will this work with a older HP laptop?

As long as your current laptop supports SATA 3 speeds and your chassis isn't super thin (we're talking MacBook Air thin), then I would say yes. The easiest way to swap is to 1) purchase a 'USB to 2.5" SATA 3' adapter, 2) use disk cloning software (I personally recommend Macrium Reflect), and then 3) swap the drives. If the drive you're swapping out is the boot disk, you'll see an instant and noticeable difference in boot times.
