How does this work?  What is it hooked up to?

It can be hooked up to anything with a 3.5 jack or a 6.2mm jack if you have a converter.  (Can buy converter in any store for like $2.)

The button on the stand  is a mute button.

I currently have it hooked up to my sound card in my computer so I can talk while playing online games.

It is just a plain microphone.  It hooks up to something like any other microphone does.   Think of it an in input device like anything else or the opposite of speakers.  A speaker is an output device so you hear stuff from soemone else, the microphone allows you to input sound to the device.

Question 2

Do you HAVE to push the button down to talk? Because i have games that require a key to be pushed and so i cant push down a keyboard key and push down this key AND play a game at the same time.

It's a "push on - push off" type of button (locking), so you don't have to hold it down like a "push-to-talk" (momentary).

One other comment, screws on the bottom of the mic's stand are kinda sharp, could scratch desk top. I put little rubber pads under my mic.

Otherwise, works fine.

how is the sound quality that comes out of this? do you have to "have it in your mouth" or can you have it away on a desk?

This is the best mic I've found it sounds great either close up or a few feet away.

I used it for interactive classes you can press the button lightly for a quick question or press it down till it clicks for long answers.

Very well made with a metal base.

Will it work with Windows 8.1?? It is USB or Plug?

It is not a USB. It is a standard headphone jack. I t should work with any mic port.

Iv used this for over a year with TeamSpeak wile gaming it does the job fine. However others can hears my background noise if my speaker volume is turned up to high.

Its a great low cost option for this kind of use.

Does this mic. come out well after recordings?

Depends on how good of a quality you want.  I use a condenser microphone and comparing to this, its obvious (to me) I didn't want this for THAT use.

For just casual voice chat then yeah.
