Analog phone line is for fax. I'm not aware of wireless fax! :) Wireless capability is used for printing/scanning.

does the printer have to connected to the internet or will it just work over Wi-Fi?

Hello, I wasn't 100% sure this printer can be accessed over the internet. I checked and couldn't find anything on that. I currently have mine connected over my wireless network. Here is a note I found: The internal wireless card comes standard on the 6015NI, providing the freedom to locate the machine anywhere in the office. Hope this helps. I think the price of the machine pays for itself in the long run, because you don't have to change the toner as often as ink. And on newegg.com, there are great deals on the toner.

It has a fax function, but we do not use it.

Do not know about Win8. We use Win 7 professional.

I printed a test page and came out with a Pink line on the left side of the paper. Is the Printer broken? need to see picture?

You could try something simple like replacing the toner, but no, a new printer should not be doing that at all, and if it's anything more than a bad toner, I would get it replaced (if it's still within newegg's 30 day policy) or have it warrantied by xerox if it's out side newegg's 30 day policy.
