I am going to upgrade from a 120 gig m.2. My laptop has a sata connection for a secondary hard drive. Does this m.2 come with a sata to m.2 connector cable to clone the primary hard drive?

No, it comes only with the drive itself, would be much cheaper to just get a SATA SSD rather than adding cables to adapt the M.2,  SATA 3 limits to 6 GigaBit/s (1Gigabit = 0.125 Gigabyte) M.2 is best used in M.2 slot or Adapter with Nvme M.2 card in PCIe slot where data transfer is much more capable of using the bandwidth

Can this be used to speed up my HDD reads?

It will not and can not make your spinning platter HDD faster. but you can move all your data from the spinning HD to this SSD and the response time will be amazing. Just make sure your Motherboard has a M.2 connector on it or you can use the PCIe slot with an adapter card.

I'm not familiar with Apple products. But any motherboard you want to attach this SSD to will need a M.2 slot. Almost all laptop motherboards do not have a M.2 slot. Yours probably doesn't have it.

I am going to buy MSI Z370 SLI PLUS LGA 1151 (300 Series) Intel Z370 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.1 ATX Intel Motherboard. 
Do I anticipate any issues building a system together. Like do I need a adapter or anything ?. Advise would be helpful

No, you won't need an adapter, but what I would highly recommend because of personal experience, get the Western Digital Black NVMe version. ADATA products are not reliable nor durable in my opinion. I have now switched all of my main drives to Western Digital and most back ups.

Get this instead: N82E16820250097, cost more but you won't regret it.

Is this compatable with the Mid 2014 Macbook Pro 13" Retina?

Look up the specs on your computer and see if the motherboard has an M.2 socket that supports NVME  and will accommodate the 2280 form factor. Even if it does, this is a  PCIe Gen 3, NVME 1.3 device so your 2014 computer probably won't match those specs and you won't realize the full potential of this drive, but it will operate at the maximum your computer will support (if the motherboard supports the device).
