So has anyone bought this recently, as I have bought one from newegg about 2 weeks ago, but sadly had to return it due to it missing a bolt, and it having a backplate so I couldn't install it. I would like to know whether or not the ones you guys have bought had a backplate as well?

Yes it has a backplate but it fits over what is stock on the board. At least on intel sockets in particular 1151 socket. It actually required a foam padding included to be stuck on it to help extend it a bit and add pressure. Did you even try to use it or had it oriented correctly? It is an incredible cooler and a shame you had to return it.

Will this work with the new skylake LGA 1151 socket CPUs?

I am not technically savvy enough to answer that question directly. What you can do is go to Zalman's very comprehensive website and look up this - or any other - cooler. A spreadsheet will tell you every hardware piece that this cooler is compatible with. BTW, it was too large to fit in my Lian Li ATX sized case - so the cooler still sits in its' shipping box.

can you change the LED fan to something else?

I don't why you cannot, four corner screws like most fans, although I have not needed to change this at this point. Fortunately correct color for my system.

WILL THIS COOL AMD FX9590 CPU?

The cooler supports AM3 (might be with an included adapter) so if the heatsink mounting pattern between AM3 and AM3+ is physically the same on the board (it sounds like the difference is in SLI/crossfire support) then it should work.
