Does it work with a VGA adapter?

Yes.

Got to Zotac - download the User Manual.  It says:
"5. DVI port
The DVI port supports connection to analog monitors and displays (supports VGA for analog monitors with bundled DVI-VGA adapter).
6. HDMI port
The HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) output supports Full HD 1080p displays such as an HDTV or monitor."

The reality is that you will always get a better display with a digital, hi background lighting LED display.    Does it matter? I think so..   set up an Adobe - 2 full page per screen PDF display...   then you see the difference..

I prefer HDMI - but analog works - and that is how I have my Zotac hooked up.

This unit is fast enough for almost anything.  I use it with a Samsung 840 SSD.   An 850 SSD - would be almost as cheap now - and SSDs are much faster than HDDs...   Old HDDs can be ported to USB 3 external drive enclosures or hooked up by eSATA.

Will this boot from a USB stick or an SD memory card?
If so, will it do so without a hard drive?

I installed W7 Ultimate from an OEM image on a 16GB USB. I have not tried the SD card, but it might work (might not). See if you can find anything in the BIOS manual or firmware update page or something.

Since booting a kernel/OS from various physical sources is a BIOS function, which is stored on the board itself, there is no reason that Linux, etc, will not boot from USB in the absence of a HDD/SSD. To my knowledge, there is no correlation between the booting from USB and having an active SATA connection--that would be a 1/1'000'000'000 occurrence. However,
(I used this to build a minipc for someone, so I do not have it on hand to try booting from SD.)

No this is a bare bones  You will need to buy memory and a hard disk.  And an OS as well.  I bought 16 GB of memory and this little PC is much faster than the one it replaced (which granted only had a 32 bit OS and 4 GB of memory (of course only 3.2 useable).

I bought one of these, but cant figure out how to get into
the bios, I need to change the boot order.
So how do I get into the bios?

The Zotac website says their ZBOX ID18 has an mSATA interface. It sounds from one review that this is not true. Is there an mSATA connector, so I can add my little SSD?
