I've read some reviews of other powerline adapters sticking up too far to use the top outlet.  do these really leave room for another three-pronged plug above it?

This model only allows space for a two-pronged plug above it. But it has a three-pronged outlet on its front.

What's the difference between pass-through and non pass-through?

Pass-through allows to you to plug in another electrical device into the same outlet (you'll notice the electrical outlet holes on the pass-though devices).

Non-pass-though means that the electrical outlets into which you plug the network adapters can't be used for anything else.

Honestly, I don't know - however - I'd imagine as many plug outlets as you have within the domain.

Personally, I've tried other brands; this is absolutely the best; you get what you pay for, really!  I use mine to supply a distant range extender.  It's extremely stable, works as if it's been hard wired.  Instillation couldn't be easier.  For a definitive answer to your question, call or e-mail the manufacturer.

Note:  This doesn't have built-in WI-FI capabilities; it's a stand-alone  Ethernet connection.

Will this work plugged into a 2-prong outlet using a 2-prong to 3-prong adapter?

I have not tried it, but I would imagine it would work, since the third prong is a safety ground, and any signal would get grounded off. However, you may experience decreased speed, since the safety ground helps absorb interference.

The one I have works perfectly. I use it to connect an apple TV directly to my router, since the wireless connection was too slow. When I used to stream HD movies, it would sometimes take 10 minutes to buffer before it would play the movie, then stop to buffer every once in a while. Now, it plays within a minute and without interruption.

Other things to note:
I have this plugged in its own outlet. The unit is a bit bulky, so it blocks the third prong of the plug above it, so don't expect to be able to use the outlet for anything else.

Also, the pass-through plug seems to be misaligned or blocked on the inside. I was unable to plug a three-pronged plug into either one. You can insert the plug about half way and it falls out.

tl;dr Works great, but don't expect to be able to plug anything else into that outlet.

Can you plug one of them into a gigabit switch not plugged into your router?

Yes.  They basically turn your power line into a big hub with a single collision domain.  You can plug more or less anything you want (in terms of ethernet) into these guys and they will connect it to all the other points on your powerline network.

It was a while ago that I purchased mine but I am pretty certain it came with two yellow ones - I just checked and I definitely have two identical cables which I am almost certain came with the adapters.

Not sure what you are asking. I am guessing you are confused about what this product does.

This is a PowerLine adapter,  the primary purpose of which is to use the electrical wiring in your home as ethernet wiring to transfer data from the router to another device (probably in another room far removed from the router's location), this).  This device could be a computer or any other connected device.

In other words this does exactly what your WiFi does(transfer data and content) but instead of wireless signals this uses your electrical wiring. So if all your end devices have Wifi and you are able to connect to the Internet or home network using your Wifi router and MOST IMPORTANTLY if you are pleased with the speed and reliability of such a wireless connection then you don't need this PowerLine adapter. But any of the above mentioned assumptions are not correct about your connectivity needs then this device is definitely recommended. Or if your home layout allows you to connect directly to the router or switch via an ethernet cable without
leaving a mess of cables everywhere then that would be a more preferred method to this product.

I use it to connect any stationary devices in my home though a wired connection. Simple rule of thumb is if the device does not move around (like a laptop or mobile phone) it is connected via a wired connection and that is where the PowerLine adapter comes in handy. Because otherwise my home would be a mess of tangled ethernet cables running from the router/switch in the office to all other locations.

This does not have anything to do with xfinity or your cable subscription. The modem provided by xfinity can be hooked up to a router and the router to one end of the PowerLine adapter.

Question 9

Will these PLA's work with the last generation of Zyxel 500 Mbps PLA's?  Meaning, if i have a 500 Mbps Zyxel PLA receiving and rebroadcasting an internet connection across my powerlines, will these 600 Mbps PLA's pick it up or would i need to create a second PLA network for the 600 Mbps units?

I have the 600's working with 2 PLA-407's.  One of the 600;s is connected to the router, the other is connected to a computer in my livingroom.  Both of the PLA-407's are attached to printers in my home network.   Everything is working well.

Question 10

I have a shop 45 yards from the house, according to the description ("up to 300 meters transfer range.") could I connect in the shop keeping it on the same side of the 240v?  Regards, Tom

From my experience, if the electrical circuits are under the same power box, you shouldn't have any problems. But I can't guarantee as I never tested the way you wanna use it.
