5 out of 5 eggsGreat portable optical disk drive

Pros: - Sexy and sleek design

- Very Portable (my reason behind buying it)

- Great price (I used a promo code

- M-Disc is supported

Cons: None

Overall Review: My reason buying this drive was because I wanted a portable USB powered drive that I could pack around with my to client's homes. I also wanted a drive I could use when working on client machines in my shop that no longer had a working DVD drive installed in them. This fit the bill and it was under $30 using a promo code. I did not know about M-Disc but am very curious to try them out and it is nice knowing this slim drive supports them. If you are not familiar with M-Disc, just google it to find out more. This drive does exactly as I expected. Thanks Newegg.

Use PROMO Code: STORAGE1

Hurry it ends on 3/26!

5 out of 5 eggsGood quality for the price

Pros: Firstly, we've got a decent finish. It's also very thin for an external drive. While the speeds aren't as fast as a desktop sized external, it certainly gets the job done. I needed a drive that supported M-Disc, and this fit the bill perfectly! The build quality seems top-notch and the drive doesn't feel flimsy like other external slim drives I've owned in the past.

Cons: The included USB cable could be longer, and the eject button should be silver or another color so it stands out better against the drive's faceplate.

Overall Review: Works great on Windows, Mac OS X and Linux.

1 out of 5 eggsUsed one time . ONE ! Drive is no longer recognized by any PC / laptop or Mac

Pros: Light weight . LG brand ? ( i guess its still a - pro )

Cons: 25 min . I used this disk drive for about 25 minutes .1. Acronis software was installed successfully. 2. HP All in One printer CD software was finishing installation- Drive got disappeared after Rebooting PC . Wierd clicking sound - and thats it , dead . Im out of 30 days Newegg return window. Lesson learned : use / check everything while you have a chance to return or replace.

Overall Review: I like LG products . I think i just got a lemon . Hopefully believe LG won’t violate my trust in the future . And - NO , i would not recommend this disk drive

4 out of 5 eggsOK now but strange details

Pros: can work ok but sensitive to usb cable

Cons: usb cable very short

Overall Review: using windows 8.1. had trouble originally when plugged into usb 3 port, but then in usb 2 it worked fine. then i discovered it was the cord. the one that comes with the unit is very short so i was using a usb 2 extension cord into the usb 3 port - that is when i had the trouble. when i just used the cord that came with the unit it works now in the usb 3 port. i tried a second usb 2 extension cord and it also malfunctioned. A little quirky and i need to experiment with more cords but the unit works fine if this issue does not create a problem

5 out of 5 eggsSmall, quiet portable

Pros: Works great. Plug and play for Mac OS X and Windows. Im not quite sure what the driver disc is for, maybe extra software for burning CDs and DVDs though. It's very small, thin, and quiet. Very light and portable.

Cons: Not much to complain about. It's USB 2.0, but Im not sure if USB 3.0 would be any faster for writing/reading CDs and DVDs anyway.

4 out of 5 eggsNot bad for the price

Pros: I needed a this because i'm a iMac owner and i don't need a full time cd/dvd rom drive but this is nice to have and easy to use. Plus you can hook it up to any tv with a USB port

Cons: Non that i can think of i've only used it a couple of time and put it away when i need it next. It's not a full time thing with me right now needed to burn stuff to cd/dvd but it's nice if you need it

Overall Review: For the price and all it has to offer i think i made a good choice

5 out of 5 eggsGreat drive!

Pros: Not insanely loud, does the job

Cons: Nothing

Overall Review: I borrowed my friends for over a month for my use and that drove me to get this so I can return his. It looks good! I've worked it a lot lately since I watch movies with it some, but especially use it to make Linux DVDs for legacy computers (and Windows bc I can never get a USB to work) and I've ditched MP3 music and use this to rip music into flac/alac and it does the job!

5 out of 5 eggsDoes it right the first time

Pros: No switches, dials, knobs, or membrane buttons to push (other than to insert media)
Powers right up when energized and works as expected.
Very portable.
A true plug and play device

Cons: Non skid feet on device bottom would beneficial but still a two handed operation to use.

Overall Review: At nearly double the price of an internal drive I have to wonder if it is really worth it. However if you factor in the ability to use this device with computers where an internal drive is not possible, then you may justify the additional cost.

4 out of 5 eggsSo far, just what i need

Pros: Small and very easy to configure - just plug and play with my Mac

Cons: It runs a bit on the noisy side, but seeing as how I don't use the drive continuously, that is not a major drawback.

Pros: Affordable and does what its supposed to. Installed windows and numerous games through usb with this device. Working just fine.

Pros: Small, light reads and writes nicely for this kind of product. Another good reason we really don't need DVDs in laptops since they die so quickly anyway

Cons: None so far.

Pros: compact, usb powered, light weight, very portable, affordable

Cons: none so far

5 out of 5 eggsYou need one

Pros: Performs as advertised. With the advent of small machines such at the ITX, Micro ATX, etc. where there is no room for an internal DVD, this fills the bill. Also note that the DVD clicks in rather than flopping around as in an internal DVD drive so that you could operate it upside down if you wanted to. I haven't tried that... yet.

Cons: None, I have always had good luck with LG.

Overall Review: I have just about the smallest ITX case you can get. I put an Acer display on top of it and now that I have the LG external DVD, I put it between the top of the ITX case and the Acer display and everything fits and works perfectly.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks perfectly as described for both Mac and PC.

Pros: You are able to plug and play on both Mac and PC without any issues.

Cons: - It is a bit noisy, but not by much, just disc spinning.
- Mac requires a different ejection process, which is as described by the manual, so it doesn't really matter.

Overall Review: if you get this on sale, it is pretty much what you need with some current computer cases not having disc slots anymore, and Mac laptops not having disc readers, which is what it was used for.

4 out of 5 eggsNot so bad after all

Pros: Compact, works well as long as it gets adequate power from the USB connection (no provision for external power)

Cons: May not work on some laptops due to inadequate USB power. you can fix this with a USB Y-cable

Overall Review: Since I can't correct my earlier review, this is an update to my earlier bad review (did not work on my Surface Pro with constant errors and spinup/spindown). I discovered that the problem was inadequate power coming through the USB port, a common problem with laptop and these USB-powered drives. After getting a Y-cable (single mini-USB male end, to two full-size USB male plugs, one for data and one for power only) the drive works fine. I plug one part of the Y into the charger socket, the other into the laptop, and it works fine without errors. It would be nice if they included a small power supply, or at least a plug for one, with these USB-only units, but they don't, so save a lot of grief and buy the inexpensive Y cable if you get one of these.

Pros: - Handy to have around when optical media needs to be read

Cons: - Does not feel sturdy. I'm always afraid the tray might break when loading or unloading media.

Overall Review: Feels flimsy and the transfer rate is slow.

3 out of 5 eggsIt does the Job

Pros: I got it free with my G-Skill Ram purchase

Cons: Cheaply made, loud, and slow

Overall Review: Well, I got it free with my G-Skill RAM purchase. I did need it for my new non-drive desktop build. I won't be using it a lot, which is why i'm not bothered by it's fault.

It really loud, extremely fragile with some cheap plastic used for it's housing. I feel like it'll easily break. It's not quick either, but at least it does the job.

Pros: The ole lady's laptop has no optical drive. Brought this as an alternative. Works fine... powered off the USB port so no need for a power source... Works fine for her and me since my optical drive stopped working on my desktop.

Cons: None so far.

Overall Review: With the loss of optical and floppy drive bays on desktops you're gonna need this if you want to install media or rip/burn CD's. It's a shame but at least there's a solution...

5 out of 5 eggsImpressive & Modern Lines

Pros: This unit is priced to sell with quality and best bank for your buck. Unit performs well, fast, and quite nice to look at. Complements my Dell Inspiron 7000 aluminium chassis really well.

Cons: None to think of, except that it doesn't use a full size usb plug. This can be attributed to the lower profile of the unit.

5 out of 5 eggsLG USB 2.0 Ultra Slim External DVDRW Model GP60NS50

Pros: Reading CDs & DVDs works well with my newer (minus DVD drive) Mac mini. Software included was not needed for reading - I haven't burned any DVDs or used any M-discs to date. Compact, quiet & mostly silver finish compliments the Mac. Decent holiday sale price (~$30).

Cons: Somewhat short (~24" ) cable so it will have to sit right next to my Mac.

Overall Review: My drive only shows up in the Mac Finder if it has a disc in it - that may be the way the Mac works. The drive door only opens 1" when hitting eject on the drive case (mechanical) or in the Mac Finder (via software). Since the drive is so light weight I need both hands to extend the disc holder fully to load/unload the drive. Not fatal but I will have to sandwich it between the Mac and something else to allow for one hand loading/unloading (my preference). Your mileage may vary...

1 out of 5 eggsNot mac compatible

Pros: Attractive, small external optical drive. Appears to be well constructed.

Cons: Not mac compatible as claimed. I have a Late 2013 21.5" iMac model ME08LL/A (upgraded from Mtn. Lion to Mavericks) and I could not get it to recognize the drive. It would get enough power to open the tray to insert a disc.

I RMA'd the unit, the replacement couldn't be recognized either. Both units did work on my Mid-2012 15" Retina MacBook Pro however.

The USB cable included with both units isn't like the one depicted. The included cable only had one USB Type A connector, not two to provide additional power.

Overall Review: Shame it didn't work, it matches my macs.

2 out of 5 eggsWouldn't recommend it.

Pros: -It can do what it's suppose to do sometimes.

Cons: -Painfully slow. Expect to wait hours for a single burn.
-Can even stall out in middle of burn. Wasting CD/DVD.

2 out of 5 eggsgood looking, not so good working

Pros: Looks great! Lightweight. No installation necessary, just plug it in and off you go.

Cons: You get less than a month's use out of it. It won't read CDs properly. It's toast, as far as I'm concerned. It's also quite loud, when it chooses to work.

Overall Review: Not worth the time.

1 out of 5 eggsStopped working after a day

Pros: None

Cons: Purchased on sale on Black Friday so I could rip some of my DVDs and copy a few old data discs I had laying around. Worked fine for a day. The next day when I continued copyng my data the drive made it halfway through a CD before it started making a loud noise. Now it won't read any disc I put in it. Do yourself a favor and buy something else. Last time I'll ever buy an LG product.

Pros: No installation to speak of. USB powered. Computer installed driver automatically when plugged in. Works on Windows XP.

Cons: Slower than an internal drive would be. Activity light a little dim.

Overall Review: I bought this just to install a program on a windows xp computer that the original dvd drive had died on. It is only used once a month to update this program, and for that it is fine. It takes twice as long to update using this over what it took with the original dvd drive, but didn't want to fool with it, so I bought this.
