2 out of 5 eggsDecent, but not Good

Pros: Decent price (@ $39.99), reasonably durable construction, tool-less design.

Cons: NOISY! Good grief... even at idle, the fan buzzes and creates a harmonic vibration in the case that makes it pretty much intolerable to have this thing sitting on your desk for any length of time. The fact that it has a fairly short (1m, tops) USB cable (which is of decent quality) makes it impossible to hide somewhere to try to make it less obtrusive.
Also, when trying to slide the HD tray back into place, one of the screws that holds a plastic guide to the tray fell out, and rattled around in the case. When I pulled it back apart and put the screw back in, I found it had already been stripped out. The sheet-metal in the tray is simply too thin for the screws to thread into, and both of them will not tighten. I simply put the screw back, snugging it so it would stay in place, and gingerly re-inserted the drive tray. So far, it's staying in place, but I expect it'll fall out again, what with the vibration from the fan.

Other Thoughts: Since I'm using this device as extra 'server' space (with a 3TB WD Red drive) and not simply backup storage, it is simply too loud for day-to-day use. If it was a backup-only solution, it would be tolerable, I suppose.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Very well designed and well constructed case. Feels absolutely solid, easy to switch out the drive, and it looks very sleek on my desk.

Cons: The fan is pretty loud, and too small to make much of a difference. Cooling isn't really needed for the hard drive I have in there, so I just leave it turned off. I don't see it as a big issue.

1 out of 5 eggsFailed within one day!

Pros: Nice outer construction. Easy to insert hard drives.

Cons: This unit is very noisy with the fan turned on. As a result, it's totally useless as a desktop drive. It failed less than one day after I received it. The included instructions are written in very bad English.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat External Enclosure

Pros: Heavy Construction and unit will not slide. Tool less design and works great. Like the Aluminum construction. I had purchased the silver usb, firewire version before and loved it so I bought these black versions and they work great. It appears they made some improvements with the design. The fan can now be controlled by a switch. No more Aluminum with holes beneath the hard drive, just an open section which should allow the heat to dissipate faster. Solid device and works great with SATA 1TB and 2TB drives. Have not tried 3 TB yet.

Cons: The 3.3ft USB cable is still short. Would have like it if Orico made them longer. Same for the eSATA cable. 6ft is typically the standard for cable lengths especially if you are connecting external enclosures. A little pricey. Still not sure if the fan sucks the heat out or blows in air from the back. I wish they designed the internal cooling a bit better. Make paths or something for the fan to reach the hard drive. The SATA connector in the back is blocking most of the air.

Other Thoughts: If you want a high quality external HDD enclosure I would recommend you give Orico a try. I did and still love these devices even with the cooling fan minor issues.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat case... except for sleep

Pros: These are some of the best physical designs of hard drive cases I've encountered since Kingston stopped making cases. From the large feet, flat and squat and sturdy, to the well placed ventilation holes, to the tool-less drive carrier that can be easily converted to a normal drive carrier by removing two screws, to the variable speed fan that only spins as fast as it needs to, these seem excellent. I'll know in a few months if their electronics are as equally well designed. Works fine with 3TB, even 4TB, disks (assuming your system supports 3TB & 4TB disks - remember to use GPT!).

Cons: Spins down disks regularly when connected via eSATA (haven't tried USB). This introduces delays not only when accessing the device, but also when other system events occur (like waking from screen locks) that evaluates all mounted devices. I've sidestepped this issue by running touch every couple minutes, to keep regular activity on the drive. This sleep occurs regardless of system-wide sleep settings, perhaps Orico could release a firmware update to disable the case chipset's sleep setting. In the case of my backup drive, the drive no sooner goes to sleep than an incremental backup kicks off and spins it up, that kind of constant spin down & up will kill a drive's motor dead in no time.

Other Thoughts: I've always preferred drives to use horizontal, rather than vertical, mounts. While modern drive bearings don't care (back in days of yore the bearing would quickly wear out when the drive was on a side instead of flat), it's harder to introduce big undulations (by bumping the desk, for instance) in the drive when the is case is flat and wide like these. The only way Orico could improve this design would be to release a quad interface variant (1394a, 1394b, USB, & eSATA).

2 out of 5 eggsNoise

Pros: Easy to insert various HDDs, Simple set up, Master power on back, Power on front,

Cons: Loud like that dull whirring sound you hear when flying on a passenger jet (near the engines). While most noise comes from the HDD itself, the case seems to magnify it. So far ran an old 160 Gb Hitachi and a new 1TB WD. The WD was a quieter, but still too much noise for regular use or doing backups daily.

Other Thoughts: Intent was to make use of multiple old drives for various and redundant backups. Too loud for that. But if you want to clean up an old driver (shred files before giving it away), this might be the answer. Or you want to burn a smaller Gb drive to a larger one, this might be what you want. But if you want a quiet office - don't go here.

5 out of 5 eggsIt does support drives over 2TB

Pros: This enclosure does work fine with drives over 2 TB as long as you use the proper version of Windows and the eSATA cable instead of the USB cable.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: If you use a 64-bit version of Windows, as most people now do, drives over 2 TB are supported. Only 32-bit versions of Windows have a 2TB limit and that's not a fault of this enclosure or Newegg.

1 out of 5 eggs2TB drives only

Pros: tool-less drive swap is a nice feature so if you have multiple drives you need to swap in and out, this would be a good fit - takes 20-30 seconds.

Cons: windows 7, doesn't support >2 TB of data. Sure, you can put in a larger drive but as soon as you try ti actually use over 2TB of space, the drive will corrupt. So, it's a 2TB enclosure, not a 3TB per Orico docs or a 4TB per NE's description.

the fan is NOT silent, not even close. and mine never shut off, even though the specs say it will after 5 minutes.

5 out of 5 eggsHaving good gear makes me feel warm and fuzzy

Pros: I've had a lot of different HDD enclosures over the years and I found that even if they were not the best build quality, they would "usually" work as expected. I was very pleased when I started working with THIS enclosure because the build quality is rock solid with excellent performance! I bought this ORICO from Newegg because I liked the idea that it was hot-swap. You didn't have to undo a bunch of screws and disassemble it every time you wanted to change out a hard drive. Some may say that the fan is too loud, but I'm very happy that it has a fan! Plus, if you aren't using the hard drive constantly, you can just turn the fan off. Great build quality, USB 3.0, eSATA, nice features, nice looking, etc. However, the thing that I was really impressed with was that even though it said "up to 3TB" on the box, when I put a WD 4TB enterprise drive in it, the ORICO was also able to utilize this drive with no problem! Nice Bonus!!

Cons: Tool free clips are just slightly hard to use.
