Does the PSU go in with the fan facing down out of the case or blowing up into the case?

Sorry I never saw your question. I get so many emails it was lost. I'm sure you've figured this out by now, but just in case here is my answer. You can mount it either way depending on your needs. I prefer to mount it with the fan down. This allows the PSU to draw cooler air from outside. However, IF the system will be standing on carpet, I would mount it with the fan up. The carpet will restrict air flow. NOTE: I never recommend a system to be standing directly on carpet. This tends to attract more static charge and dust. One advantage of the fan facing up is that it will help to draw more hot air out of the case. However, this will also mean that you are cooling your PSU with air that is already heated. Not always the best if you are running a high power PSU that may be running hot.

i have an xfx r9 280x is quite a big card it could fit in this case?

That shouldn't be a problem. This case has the depth for extremely large cards.
