Based on a cutting-edge new architecture, Vertex 2 Solid State Drives deliver unprecedented performance while maintaining an affordable storage solution for early adopters looking to update their systems with the latest technology. OCZ designed the Vertex 2 to excel in both sequential and random read/write rates to take your PC or notebook productivity to the next level, featuring superb 4KB random writes up to 50,000 IOPS to give a performance edge over the previous generation. Using the latest controller technology, Vertex 2 not only provides a faster, more responsive PC experience, but promotes cooler, quieter, and more energy efficient conditions compared to traditional mechanical hard drives. Built with SATA 3Gb/s, the Vertex 2 Series easily integrates into today’s mobile and desktop platforms and features TRIM support to optimize performance over the drive’s lifespan as the ultimate Windows7 notebook or desktop upgrade.

  • newegg SSD Storage Technology Unlike traditional hard disk drives, SSDs have no moving parts, resulting in a quiet, cool, highly reliable storage solution that also offers faster application loading and system responsiveness. And for laptops and netbooks, the lower power needs of SSD’s translate to extended battery life. Higher performance with more durability means you can be truly mobile with confidence.
  • newegg Better Performance Built with MLC NAND flash and the latest generation SandForce SF1200 controller featuring award winning DuraClass Technology, the OCZ Vertex 2 120GB SSD delivers industry-leading SSD reliability, performance, and power efficiency, with maximum read speed up to 285 MB/s and maximum write speed up to 275 MB/s, plus incredible random 4K write performance of 50,000 IOPS.
  • newegg TRIM Support The OCZ Vertex 2 Series SSD’s offer native TRIM support than can be enabled in Windows 7. Designed to maintain the performance of SSD at an optimal level over the lifetime of the drive, TRIM functions by actively deleting invalid data from the SSD’s memory cells to ensure that write operations perform at full speed. Since a memory block must be erased before it can be re-programmed, TRIM improves performance by pro-actively erasing pages containing invalid data, allowing the SSD to write new data without first having to perform a time-consuming erase command.

1 out of 5 eggsPiece of Garbage

Pros: Absolutely nothing.

Cons: Very expensive piece of garbage. I installed this 120GB model in my PC, and it did not work at all. Even my BIOS did not recognize it.
It was DOA. Apparently this is quite common with OCZ products. Just read most of other user's comments. It is very sad and very troublesome.
Buyer be aware. I sincerely don't recommend for anyone to buy from this horrible company, OCZ.
Avoid headaches, buy a different brand.

Other Thoughts: It is impossible to reach any person at OCZ's tech support. When you call OCZ at (800) 459-1816 you get a recording saying that you must submit trouble tickets only online. It took them 3 days to reply to me by email.
When it took them so long to write me, I had already RMA'd my garbage SSD back to good old Newegg.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello, we are very sorry for the problem. We are happy that Newegg was able to assist you. If we can be of any assistance, please visit our support forums at the link below and post in the Flash/SSD section.
Thank you

1 out of 5 eggssuperfast drive, but super fast death

Pros: This drive is really fast
WEI of 7.4 in IDE mode
WEI of 7.8 in AHCI mode

Cons: Cannot shutdown the computer or the drive become unallocated (FW 1.10). With FirmWare 1.11 the drive is completly death. (it is show on the bios but Windows/ubuntu do not see it in disk manager)

Other Thoughts: Do not by this until OCZ solve their problem. As per them the problem come from the controller on the drive. and it is up to me to pay the warranty return shipping.
(before they reply... yes i tried OCZ forum support but i still get a unusable drive and a bill to paid)

Manufacturer Response:

1 out of 5 eggsreceived DOA

Pros: it was fast till it died on install, thank newegg for letting me return it, that's gotta be a Pro

Cons: went "ka-put" on me after finishing clean install of Win7 and misc programs that I use on my laptop, all installed from USB key and network drives. It rebooted and was never found again by the bios, plugged into external USB SATA HD adapter and can be seen but not accessed, so drive was pronounced dead about 6 hrs after i started (i took my time :)) .

Other Thoughts: have the Vertex LE, Turbo, Vertex... this is first drive that died on me, doesn't change opinion on the drive family, its a good product. This goes with cutting edge tech, stuff will die on you out of the blue.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello, we are sorry for the problem. We are happy that all of your other OCZ drives are working well for you, and we are sure that your replacement will serve you well.
Thank you

1 out of 5 eggsSSD -- Little apparent benefit

Pros: Easily installed cloned Vertex 2 120 GB in SATA1 position with AHCI enabled as boot and software program drive. 50 GB free space. Old 1 TB 7,200 rpm HDD in i7 build with LGA 1366 ASUS mobo retained in SATA2 position as a data file drive. Not starved for RAM with 12 GB. I work a lot professionally (marketing and corporate financial planning and analysis) with larger files in MS Excel and Access.

Cons: SSD is no faster in booting or in opening large files. Boot comparison is perceived, not measured. Timed both SSD and HDD at 27 seconds opening 72 MB Excel file (72 MB is compressed on the disk -- expands in RAM).

Other Thoughts: Maybe after all the hype I expected too much. I expected nearly instantaneous. OCZ has forums, but I think they could do better explaining installation and set up.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello, you should be seeing faster data access than with your standard HDD. We will be happy to look into your installation, and with benchmarking. Please visit our support forums and post in the Flash/SSD section.
Thank you

1 out of 5 eggsUh wrong read/write specs?

Pros: It looks decent

Cons: Uhh.. I'm using crystal mark and I'm getting reads of 190 - 210
and write speeds of 130?

and it says on the box that it's 285 mb read / 275mb write with 250 sustained? I don't think so

Other Thoughts: If there is some kinda firmware I was supposed to download or anything at least they could have told you on the box somewhere. I'm returning this for my money back worst SSD I've ever used, going back to my intel

Manufacturer Response:

Hello, we are sorry that you are having difficulties. We will be happy to assist you with any questions that you may have on our SSD support forums at the link below. Please pay us a visit.

1 out of 5 eggsDrive Failed After Windows Install

Pros: - Fast
- Recognized immediately by BIOS

Cons: - Failed upon a driver install/reboot after Windows Installation (BIOS no longer recognized drive in bay)

Other Thoughts: Waiting on RMA... These are supposed to be more durable than an HDD, But it seems there are still a few production issues. Hopefully this was just an oddity and not a common occurance... I would like to rely on this as my main laptop drive.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello, we aplogize for the issue, and are confident that your replacement drive will work out fine for you. If we can be of any assistance in the future, please visit the link below and post in our support forums. Thank you

1 out of 5 eggsLemon?

Pros: Expected to be fastest Drive on a market.

Cons: Top Read Speed i can get form it 127.2 min and 140.6 max MB/Sec according to HD tune. after upgrading to FW 1.10 it got even worse. 105 MB/Sec Read and never go over 100 MB/sec Write. Not 270-280 expected Will RMA and see if replace meant do any better.

Other Thoughts: I did not bougt it from NewEgg - was sold out here.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello, we are sorry that you are having problems. We will be happy to assist you with troubleshooting, and advise you of any changes that can be made to increase performance on our support forums at the link below.

1 out of 5 eggsDied during install

Pros: not yet

Cons: Died 30 minutes into first OS install and disappeared from Bios.

Other Thoughts: Kept trouble shooting not willing to believe the drive had died so quickly out of the box and missed my 30 day return opportunity with Newegg. Now it looks like I will be stuck paying for RMA shipping every time it's replacement dies for the next 3 years. OCZ says the customer paying for RMA shipping is industry standard, but it's really industry minimum, especially for a near DOA product.

I'll update this review when I get to try out the drive some more.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello, we are sorry for the problem and the inconvenience. We are confident that a new drive will work out fine for you.
Thank you
