Based on a cutting-edge new architecture, Vertex 2 Solid State Drives deliver unprecedented performance while maintaining an affordable storage solution for early adopters looking to update their systems with the latest technology. OCZ designed the Vertex 2 to excel in both sequential and random read/write rates to take your PC or notebook productivity to the next level, featuring superb 4KB random writes up to 50,000 IOPS to give a performance edge over the previous generation. Using the latest controller technology, Vertex 2 not only provides a faster, more responsive PC experience, but promotes cooler, quieter, and more energy efficient conditions compared to traditional mechanical hard drives. Built with SATA 3Gb/s, the Vertex 2 Series easily integrates into today’s mobile and desktop platforms and features TRIM support to optimize performance over the drive’s lifespan as the ultimate Windows7 notebook or desktop upgrade.

  • newegg SSD Storage Technology Unlike traditional hard disk drives, SSDs have no moving parts, resulting in a quiet, cool, highly reliable storage solution that also offers faster application loading and system responsiveness. And for laptops and netbooks, the lower power needs of SSD’s translate to extended battery life. Higher performance with more durability means you can be truly mobile with confidence.
  • newegg Better Performance Built with MLC NAND flash and the latest generation SandForce SF1200 controller featuring award winning DuraClass Technology, the OCZ Vertex 2 120GB SSD delivers industry-leading SSD reliability, performance, and power efficiency, with maximum read speed up to 285 MB/s and maximum write speed up to 275 MB/s, plus incredible random 4K write performance of 50,000 IOPS.
  • newegg TRIM Support The OCZ Vertex 2 Series SSD’s offer native TRIM support than can be enabled in Windows 7. Designed to maintain the performance of SSD at an optimal level over the lifetime of the drive, TRIM functions by actively deleting invalid data from the SSD’s memory cells to ensure that write operations perform at full speed. Since a memory block must be erased before it can be re-programmed, TRIM improves performance by pro-actively erasing pages containing invalid data, allowing the SSD to write new data without first having to perform a time-consuming erase command.

1 out of 5 eggsOCZ Vertex 2 120GB SSD Review

Pros: -Fast when it worked.

Cons: -Dead after 4 hours.
-Called Tech Support twice, of no help.

Other Thoughts: I submitted a ticket and got my RMA number, but they did not pay for shipping as I've read around (and from reading the reviews below, shipping is payed for both ways!). Newegg needs to remove this product from their stock! Beware!

Manufacturer Response:

Hello, we are very sorry for the problem. We follow common industry practice, where the customer ships in, and we ship back. We apologize for for the inconvenience. Thank you

1 out of 5 eggsdead in 6mo.

Pros: fast enough. Initially no complaints.

Cons: In 6 months it was dead. Took about 3 weeks to RMA and and receive a new drive. Also sent them a 2VTXE120G and they sent back a VTX120g, which cost less. Can't live with out a computer for three weeks so I used another HD. When the replacement drive arrived didn't feel like going through the the aggravation of putting it in.

1 out of 5 eggsDrive just failed.

Pros: It was good while it worked for the first 34 days.

Cons: It failed on me. I seem to have lost all my data on that drive now that it is inaccessible.

I just submitted an RMA to OCZ hopefully I will get a refund or a new drive.

1 out of 5 eggsDead In Less Than a Week

Pros: It was fast while it worked.

Cons: This brand new drive died in less than a week once I had it up and running. Apparently, this is a common problem with this drive. It goes into a "Panic" mode and renders the drive nothing more than a Brick and must be sent back to the manufacturer to resolve.

I was able to install windows normally, and it functioned well, until one day from a cold start, it would hang at the Bios. I would have to restart the computer multiple times in order for it to not hang. After multiple restarts, the drive was finally recognized by the BIOS, I was able to get into Windows for about 10 minutes before Windows froze and crashed. Upon rebooting, the drive would no longer be recognized by the BIOS. There is a solid Red light on the back of my SSD, and apparently that means it is dead or in "Panic" mode with no consumer option or utility to resolve the problem without sending it in for an RMA.

Other Thoughts: I am VERY dissappointed with this drive. I have been running an original 60GB Vertex Drive for over a year but when I began running out of space I decided to upgrade to a larger drive. I was so happy with my original Vertex, I decided to buy from OCZ again. That was my mistake. I should have done more research before purchasing as now I thoroughly regret my desicion. The worst part of it all, is that I bought this drive from a friend. It was new and unopened, however, OCZ states: "This warranty is valid only for the original purchaser of products purchased from an authorized OCZ dealer. Except where prohibited by law the warranty is non-transferable." I'm tempted to not even waste my time and just move onto another company that makes hardware that is built to last.

1 out of 5 eggsDOA

Pros: None. Don't buy it, they aren't as good as they used to be.

Cons: I bought the drive during the ShellShocker deal for $190, and recieved it two days later. Tried the drive on my P55 motherboard and in two laptops and it wouldn't post or show as a boot device. Went on the OCZ Support Forum and asked a couple of questions about what I should do and why this happened. They were mostly rude, and after a while just decided to stop answering me. These drives are failing left and right, I don't recommend buying them at all. OCZ changed the chips out at the beginning of the year from 34nm 32Gbit chips to 25nm 64Gbit chips, which made the drive a lot slower. This particular drive can still be the old 25nm 64Gbit chips, so don't buy it. I would steer clear of OCZ completely, but if you are still considering buying a Vertex 2, look for one with this part number - "OCZSSD2-2VTX120G.34". It's the 34nm 32Gbit version, which is better.

Other Thoughts: Spent a couple of hours getting trying to get it to work. I expected to atleast get a working slower 25nm version, but instead I got a dead one. Don't buy it.

1 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Fast boot times.

Cons: It only had about 109gb of free space, not really close to the 120gb advertised.

But more importantly it failed after 2 weeks. I RMAd it to get it replaced, and the replacement failed right out of the box. That's two back to back bricked SSDs. I would recommend buying a different SSD as the failure rate on this one is absurdly high. This product should not be on the shelf with this high of a failure rate.

Other Thoughts: The RMA process was a little hairy, the site claimed it was not delivered, I had to submit FedEx tracking number with their own signature to prove it was delivered and signed for. But once they got the proof, They did replace it quickly....with another broken SSD.

1 out of 5 eggsGreat while it worked

Pros: Fast drive while it worked

Cons: Installed the drive and push an image down to it. Started getting OS errors within a few days. Then corrupted files notifications that had to be fixed on boot. I though it was the image so I went through the long process of reinstalling the OS and moving back in. Rebooted this morning and it starts the drive check again but hangs on the reboot. Hard reboot the laptop and no hard drive found. Tried it in another laptop with the same results.

Other Thoughts: When I bought this drive it was reviewed with 4 out of 5 eggs. Now it is only 3 out of 5 and almost every recent review is complaining that the drive is DOA or fails in a couple weeks. There is obviously something wrong with OCZ's manufacturing process that consistently is producing defective drives. After reading all the new reviews I tried to get a refund so I could purchase something more reliable but this drive is only eligible for a replacement after I pay $10 to ship it back to newegg. You can find something better, do not purchase this hard drive.

OCZ - if you are going to respond to my review can you address the failure rate with the product?

1 out of 5 eggsNow I'm seriously angry.

Pros: Fast RMA turnaround.

Cons: Sending out defective merchandise to replace defective merchandise.

Other Thoughts: The good: My first drive failed after 10 weeks (3-egg review below). I sent it in for RMA and had a new one 4 days after they received it, including a weekend.

The bad: The new one worked for 10 hours.

HOURS. I spent all afternoon downloading drivers, installing applications, transferring data, only to have it BSOD. Again.

I'm now out the cost of return shipping AGAIN, plus the 4 hours or so it takes to get the machine set up again and my data transferred over to it.

The ugly: To say I'm angry with OCZ would be a vast understatement. They obviously know there's a problem and must be fielding hundreds of RMAs based on reviews and threads I'm seeing. Why keep sending out the SAME PIECE OF HARDWARE if it's obviously broken?

Unacceptable, OCZ. Unacceptable.

1 out of 5 eggsDO NOT BUY THIS DRIVE. IT'S NOT 120GB

Pros: IT'S NOT 120GB, it will only report 115GB and only 115GB use able.

Cons: I got two of this drive and one report in BIOS as 120GB and one report as 115GB.
called OCZ the first time they tell me that I got the drive with the 25nm chips and tell me to do a replacement RMA with NewEgg. I did that and got a new drive that reports 115GB again. call OCZ again. this time telling me that part number OCZSSD2-2VTXE120G is the one with 25nm chips and said it will only report 115GB and only 115GB is use able and the older drive with part number OCZSSD2-2VTX120G will report 120GB and 120GB use able. but I have another drive that I order together with the same part number and it is reporting 120GB and 120GB use able. they did offer to do an exchange for the older drive but still prefer that I do it with NewEgg. NewEgg did a great job with my RMA that from start to finish only took 5 days. but I am just too frustrated and need my new workstation working now to deal with anymore of these [B][S]. will most likely will never buy anymore OCZ products.

Other Thoughts: if OCZ offer an advance exchange by taking my CC and overnight me the drive I want. I would have forgiven them, but they didn't and say their exchange will take even longer than NewEgg's. this is total [B][S]. trying to sell something that is not what it advertised.
NewEgg should put up disclaimer about this drive that it is not a 120GB drive. and point people to the older drive with out the E in the part number.
Please NewEgg put up disclaimer or pull this drive from your catalog, other wise I feel there will be many more RMA and angry customers for this drive for the same reason.

No offense to you guys at NewEgg. you guys are doing a great job.

1 out of 5 eggsOverpriced piece of junk

Pros: None

Cons: Died after 6 months. Spent months of blue screens, then started black screening stating couldn't find operating system but would find os after restarting, then finally dead . In my opinion, junk.

Manufacturer Response:
