Based on a cutting-edge new architecture, Vertex 2 Solid State Drives deliver unprecedented performance while maintaining an affordable storage solution for early adopters looking to update their systems with the latest technology. OCZ designed the Vertex 2 to excel in both sequential and random read/write rates to take your PC or notebook productivity to the next level, featuring superb 4KB random writes up to 50,000 IOPS to give a performance edge over the previous generation. Using the latest controller technology, Vertex 2 not only provides a faster, more responsive PC experience, but promotes cooler, quieter, and more energy efficient conditions compared to traditional mechanical hard drives. Built with SATA 3Gb/s, the Vertex 2 Series easily integrates into today’s mobile and desktop platforms and features TRIM support to optimize performance over the drive’s lifespan as the ultimate Windows7 notebook or desktop upgrade.

  • newegg SSD Storage Technology Unlike traditional hard disk drives, SSDs have no moving parts, resulting in a quiet, cool, highly reliable storage solution that also offers faster application loading and system responsiveness. And for laptops and netbooks, the lower power needs of SSD’s translate to extended battery life. Higher performance with more durability means you can be truly mobile with confidence.
  • newegg Better Performance Built with MLC NAND flash and the latest generation SandForce SF1200 controller featuring award winning DuraClass Technology, the OCZ Vertex 2 120GB SSD delivers industry-leading SSD reliability, performance, and power efficiency, with maximum read speed up to 285 MB/s and maximum write speed up to 275 MB/s, plus incredible random 4K write performance of 50,000 IOPS.
  • newegg TRIM Support The OCZ Vertex 2 Series SSD’s offer native TRIM support than can be enabled in Windows 7. Designed to maintain the performance of SSD at an optimal level over the lifetime of the drive, TRIM functions by actively deleting invalid data from the SSD’s memory cells to ensure that write operations perform at full speed. Since a memory block must be erased before it can be re-programmed, TRIM improves performance by pro-actively erasing pages containing invalid data, allowing the SSD to write new data without first having to perform a time-consuming erase command.

1 out of 5 eggsDied during install

Pros: not yet

Cons: Died 30 minutes into first OS install and disappeared from Bios.

Other Thoughts: Kept trouble shooting not willing to believe the drive had died so quickly out of the box and missed my 30 day return opportunity with Newegg. Now it looks like I will be stuck paying for RMA shipping every time it's replacement dies for the next 3 years. OCZ says the customer paying for RMA shipping is industry standard, but it's really industry minimum, especially for a near DOA product.

I'll update this review when I get to try out the drive some more.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello, we are sorry for the problem and the inconvenience. We are confident that a new drive will work out fine for you.
Thank you

1 out of 5 eggsYou won't get 120GB

Pros: This drive is faster than a hard drive when reading, not really for sequential writing. Tech support is responsive.

Cons: You won't get the advertized 120GB for this drive. OCZ has swapped manufacturing lowering capacity to ~114GB but not the 120GB on the box. On the OCZ site, it lists the RAW capacity as 128 GB, but an IDEMA capacity of 115GB. In reality windows saw about 113.5 RAW and 106 formatted.

Other Thoughts: I am very dissapointed in OCZ by the mistake/shady marketing. They market a 120GB HD and give you 114, but to satisfy customers give you an option to pay more for the older version which gives you 120.

1 out of 5 eggsFasttttt when it worked..

Pros: Fast
Quiet

Cons: FAILED in less than 48 hours in my MacBook Pro with OS X 10.6

Other Thoughts: First I had to get a HDD Docking bay to transfer my old system files using CarbonCopyCloner (free) to the SSD, because Mac OS X snow leopard won't install from the DVD when inside a macbook pro.. I don't know why it wouldn't but thats just the way it is.. Anyhow after 48 hours in my macbook pro I'm back using the harddrive it came with and throughly disappointed with the product I received from OCZ.

1 out of 5 eggsdont buy this one.. it's a lemon

Pros: its an SSD

Cons: 1. This is not the rated and advertised Vertex 2 Drive. New parts have been used for this drive which make sit smaller in size and slower inperformance. The only difference betwee nthe two models is the "E" they added to the model number. As a consumer am i suppose know model numbers now to th epoint that i can distinguish 1 digit diffence. OCZ has used the good name it got from Vertex 2 drives and used it to sell these lemons of a drives. My 2 year old summit drive perfomes better that this brand new Sanforce Vertex 2.

Other Thoughts: I am extremly upset with this situation and want to be fully refunded for the price i paid by OCZ.

1 out of 5 eggsTerrible

Pros: Comes with a 3.5" adapter tray

Cons: Nowhere near as fast as rated, I purchased this to replace my 80GB Intel G2, in large part due to the faster specs - somewhat faster read and a write that is rated twice as fast as the Intel. According to CrystalDiskMark, read is over 1/3 slower than the Intel and write is only 1/3 faster. I'm getting 134 MB/s seq read and 115 seq write - no where near what OCZ is claiming.

Also, my first one died unexpectedly after 2 months, I found my computer crashed and it wouldn't reboot. Tried the drive in several computers and none recognized it. RMA was fairly painless and they sent me a brand new drive (the older version, not the newer version everyone is complaining about) instead of a refurb. If the drive didn't suck, I'd be pretty happy about that.

Other Thoughts: I don't understand why the drive is so slow, after the first one died, I thought maybe it was just jacked up from the start and the new one would be at the rated speed. No such luck. It's on a pretty high end 6 core AMD setup, it's ironic that the Intel performs so much better. This is my 3rd OCZ, but I'll never get another one - especially in light of their current fiasco of changing the basic parameters of the drive when moving to their new manufacturing process but keeping the same part number so there is no way to tell what you are getting.

1 out of 5 eggsBeware

Pros: Unknown

Cons: Unknown

Other Thoughts: Purchased this drive from local large chain. Called my brother who is a system integrator, and he told me BEWARE, these drive are failure prone with bad customer support. Did more research and reviews from several sites suggest that OCZ is selling an inferior product. Sorry OCZ, but im taking my drive back before I even open it cause I have lost faith.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello, we are confident that your drive would serve you well. An overwhelming majority of our customers never have and issue and are running fine. If we can answer any questions please visit our support forums at the link below. Thank you

1 out of 5 eggsAvoid like the plague . . .

Pros: When they work, life is good, but when they fail, sucks to be you!

I purchased two of these in mid-Oct and ran them in RAID 1 on my ASUS Rampage Formula. My system never detected them on cold boot, even when brand new. I always had to follow up with a warm boot before the BIOS would register them during post.

I lived with this annoyance because the speed was unbelievably fast. I assumed the following: Either the Intel X48 & ICHR9R chipset had a minor incompatibility or (more likely) BIOS firmware needed updating. (My ASUS Rampage Formula has the latest.)

After four months, the single warm boot procedure stopped working. Multiple re-boots were now required (i.e., 2-4 time). Just recently, my system started requiring 10+ boots. Now I am afraid to turn the power off. The drives might disappear forever.

Cons: After visiting OCZ Technology’s support forums, I discovered that many other people were experiencing boot detection failures. The threads go back months and include many different types of systems. The issue is not with my build.

The bottom line: OCZ Technology has not released a reliable product in the Vertex 2 series and refuses to acknowledge the problem.

Recommendation: Avoid like the plague and go with another SSD vendor (e.g., Intel, Corsair, etc.)

Other Thoughts: Realize that the Sandforce 1xxx series controllers in the Vertex 2 series were designed when 34-nm NAND parts were standard. Today OCZ Technology is using 25-nm NAND to save money. Unfortunately, the pairing of 1xxx series controllers with 25-nm NAND results in decreased write performance relative to 34-nm NAND. (See Anandtech for a discussion.)
I have RMA’ed my two defective units with OCZ Technology, which have 34-nm NAND. But I will give you one guess what OCZ will return back to me. You got it . . . new Vertex 2 units with 25-nm NAND. So my RMA replacements will be slower than my (now) defective drives. Doesn’t that make you want to buy an OCZ product?
OCZ Technology could make this right by shipping me Vertex 3 units – which have SandForce 2xxx series controllers. (The 2xxx controllers were designed with 25-nm NAND in mind.) But the chance of that is slim to none.

1 out of 5 eggssuperfast drive, but super fast death

Pros: This drive is really fast
WEI of 7.4 in IDE mode
WEI of 7.8 in AHCI mode

Cons: Cannot shutdown the computer or the drive become unallocated (FW 1.10). With FirmWare 1.11 the drive is completly death. (it is show on the bios but Windows/ubuntu do not see it in disk manager)

Other Thoughts: Do not by this until OCZ solve their problem. As per them the problem come from the controller on the drive. and it is up to me to pay the warranty return shipping.
(before they reply... yes i tried OCZ forum support but i still get a unusable drive and a bill to paid)

1 out of 5 eggsRebate process is designed to make it difficult

Pros: Worked first time I plugged it in. A lot faster than a hard drive.

Cons: The rebate process OCZ has contrived makes it difficult to get your rebate. It takes a lot of time hunting and pecking around trying to find the right form that disappeared from the product page on Newegg. Then you have to give your personal info and Newegg's order number to a third party website, then fill out and print out their form, then mail it BACK to them with your UPC code on the box. If you don't postmark it within 21 days (which they don't tell you) you lose.

Why does OCZ hassle their customers like this? Their process is designed to make it hard for customers to get a promised rebate. This type of conduct it's unacceptable. Based on this, I will not buy their product again. I expect decent customer service and not being jerked around on purpose, thus my only one egg rating.

Other Thoughts: Only getting a little over 200MB/s read using ATTO benchmarking software, not 285MB/s as advertised. Write speeds are a lot slower also.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello, all rebate details are listed on the rebate forms. Newegg manages the online rebate forms and keeps an archive of all past offers at the link below for easy access. The rebate fulfillment process is handled by a 3rd party rebate house, and mirrors our closet competitors offers. We are sorry that things seem somewhat complicated, but we have had few complaints since making the change to the online system we currently use. Thank you
