Capable of capturing sharp close-up images of small objects, the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L IS USM Macro Lens could be extremely fun for your Canon SLRs. Besides angular correction, Canon's sophisticated Hybrid Image Stabilization in this L-series macro lens compensates effectively for shift camera shake, which is significantly useful during close-up shooting. As an L series lens, it utilizes the highest quality optics design and construction. Combined with near-silent Ultrasonic focusing and full-time manual focusing, the EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM is simply unrivaled.

  • newegg Hybrid Image Stabilization The Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L IS USM Macro Lens features Canon’s sophisticated Hybrid IS to provide both angular and shift camera shake correction for sharp, blur-free images, particularly helpful for taking close-up shots.
  • newegg Ring-Type USM (Ultra-Sonic Motor) Spun by ultrasonic oscillation energy, the USM is quiet and quick, making this lens almost noiseless with a fast auto focus that's precise and practical.

5 out of 5 eggsUnreal

Pros: I can't do a tech review or this lens, I love it and will leave it at that.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: I'm not a photographer but I've been able to get some amazing shots with this lens

5 out of 5 eggsSharpest lens I own

Pros: Super sharp, image stabilization works well

Cons: Somewhat expensive, but considering this is without a doubt, THE sharpest lens in my kit, it's worth it.

Other Thoughts: You can use this lens for almost anything: macro, portraits, everyday shooting. It is super sharp, the sharpest lens in my kit which includes the 70-200 2.8 IS, 85mm 1.2, 50mm 1.4, and some others.

It's a very lightweight lens too, compared to some of the L series. It actually feels nice on a smaller camera body (I have the 5D2 and the 7D, I prefer this lens on the 7D-- plus it gives a little more 'reach' since the 7D is a crop camera)

I would highly recommend this lens.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat lens

Pros: Gives the detailed shots you long for. You don't have to be too close to the subject.

Cons: Its expensive. I think the auto focus drains my battery much quicker than manual focus.

Other Thoughts: If you can afford it and you want it, buy it.

5 out of 5 eggsWhat a great lens!

Pros: Excellent image quality, excellent build quality, fast, quiet auto focus, great bokah and great image stabilization.

Cons: expensive

Other Thoughts: I am an amateur photographer (10 years). I use this lens on my Canon 7D and T1i cameras. I take a lot of flower and insect pictures and this lens has captured some incredible images. I can shoot handheld shots of insects and get razor sharp images. I took a picture of a bumble bee on a flower handheld and you could see so much detail like the individual fine hairs on the bees back and the clumps of pollen on its face. This is truly an amazing lens. If you are into macro photography, you should get this lens.

5 out of 5 eggsI love macro!

Pros: Quality design and weighs very little for an L lens. The colors and contrast that this lens produces is fantastic. I highly recommend this baby for macro photography. In good lighting AF works just as good as any of my Canon IS lens.

Cons: The AF is slow for low light work.

5 out of 5 eggsWow

Pros: Useful length, bright lens, IS, Focus speed, Macro capability.

Cons: More expensive than my T1i!

Other Thoughts: I purchased thinking of it as a bright + image stabilized lens I can use for things like photos of indoor sports or kids school plays without use of flash (I don't like harshness of flash). Am blown away by what you can do with the macro capability - I've been wandering around the house photographing closeups of everything from nailclippers to glasses to flowers and getting amazing shots with beautiful bokeh and sharpness. Will never be bored again!

5 out of 5 eggsUnfreaking Real

Pros: This is truely an amazing lens. I have used the older Canon 100mm f/2.8, Sigm 150mm DG f/2.8, Tamron SP90 and a handful of other macros and this is by far my favorite. The IQ is unreal. How many times have you been out on a quest for a cool macro shot only to miss out on it due to how long it takes to set everything up (tripod, rail...)? Have no fear, this lens if for you. The IS works wonders and I don't often use my tripod with this anymore.

Cons: No Tripod Ring?!?

Other Thoughts: I wish you could post pictures, this would be a great way to show examples of photos taken with this lens.

5 out of 5 eggsVery Sharp Lens!

Pros: I pair this with a 7D and this lens is the sharpest in my collection (17-55, 85 1.4). I needed something longer and this fits the bill. It produces amazing color and even up there with my wifes Nikon 85 1.4D (known as the cream machine) in terms of brokah. King of the Macro lenses. Thing thing will take the most beautiful macro shot you've ever seen! The IS is awesome for handhold and walk around event and macro photography. Very fun lens!

Cons: It will work for sports and is fast enough, however you'll almost certainly need a monopod/tripod to track since it's not a zoom obviously. For indoor sports I would recommend something fast at 1.2 - 1.8 and at least 85mm.

For video the IS is a little loud compared to my 17-55, however if your shooting video on the 7D you should be using something other than the in cam mic anyway.

Other Thoughts: If you plan on getting a UV filter - I would only recommend getting something like the Hoya HD UV filters. Their spendy but they allow in the most like up to something like 99.7 percent.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat lens

Pros: IS for regular non-macro shot. AF is fast. Very sharp. This is a nice upgrade to the regular 100 mm Macro. It is now my "most-fun" lens to shoot with.

Cons: Tripod Mount Ring D isn't included and still isn't widely available

Other Thoughts: Feel more balanced on my Canon 5D Mk II than the old non IS 100 mm Macro
