The Tamron SP AF17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di II LD Aspherical [IF] is a lightweight, compact, fast standard zoom lens designed exclusively for digital SLR cameras. The focal length of this lens is equivalent to approx. 26-78mm in 35mm format. This lens offers an f/2.8 maximum aperture throughout the entire zoom range, to ensure stress-free photographic shots at all focal lengths and distances. Additionally, a broader photographic expression through the use of faster shutter speeds as a result of the maximum aperture offers enhanced photographic pleasure. Features: Optimized for Digital SLR - The use of XR (Extra Refractive Index) glass optimizes the overall distribution of optical power, and also reduces various aberrations to the absolute minimum while achieving remarkable compactness. In addition, suitable positioning of two hybrid aspherical elements serves to maintain imaging performance and to shorten and compress the entire optical system.LD Glass - An LD (Low Dispersion) glass element is used to accomplish effective compensation of on-axis and lateral chromatic aberrations, a critical factor for enhancing optical quality in digital photography, in order to achieve outstanding optical performance over the entire zoom range.Enhanced Peripheral Illumination - Peripheral light fall-off is minimized when compared with that of conventional lenses for film cameras, so images are uniformly bright from the center to the periphery.Internal Surface Coating to Reduce Ghosting and Flare - By employing "Internal Surface Coatings" (i.e., multiple-layer coatings on cemented surfaces of plural elements) and multiple-layer coating technology on ordinary elements, ghosting and flare due to the reflections that occur when light enters through the front element and reflections caused by the imagers themselves are reduced to the absolute minimum.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome Lens!

Pros: Very Sharp, That's all I can say!

Cons: A lil bit slow AF but I love doing manual focus anyway. So not a big deal.

Other Thoughts: This is my main all around lens, Works great for landscape, portraits, close ups, and for general use. I Sold my kit lens and bought this one and I no regrets.

5 out of 5 eggsFantastic

Pros: Great fast lens. Sharp, even at f2.8. At roughly a third the cost of the Canon 17-40L it's a bargain. I've played with a good example of the 17-40 and the Tamron isn't quite that sharp, but it's getting close. Colors and contrast are also top notch.

Other than the noise, the AF speed and accuracy is great...and I'm used to the USM of my 70-200L for speed and that's my point of reference.

Cons: The AF motor is noisy. I wish they made a USM version of this lens. There is an available VC (IS) version, but I find that's kind of pointless on a wide fast lens. Give us quieter focusing.

1 out of 5 eggsIt's perfect at 17mm then I zoomed out...

Pros: Uhhhh Newegg rocks! That's all I got for pro's at this point...wait the box looked pretty with all its grey and black colors and the lens hood is cute I think

Cons: everything at 17mm was tack sharp but when I zoom out the auto focus motor wouldn't turn on half the time and when it did everything was out of focus. Thought it was my camera until I saw others were having the same problem. I sent it in and 3 weeks later I get an email saying that I owe $225 for repair because of " notice of shock damage"!!! I didn't have it long enough to even get dust on it and they are saying it's my fault!!?? Just like one other reviewer who got almost the same email. I think they try and get you to pay for the repair to make some cash and if you contest it they are like ahh ok we see now that it's not your fault. I own 2 Tamron's and this will be my last!! They said the focus ring was tight which shows notice of shock damage but they looked at it again when I called and saw the zoom worked so they now see it's a manufacture defect. Really???

Other Thoughts: 6 year warranty is a joke if they try and blame every problem on you when it's clearly not your fault. Hey Tamron get some new management or you are going to start losing more customers because you already lost this one. I will say this my Tamron 18-270 VC works great and I would recommend it but for the lens only not the warranty.

5 out of 5 eggsBest Lens for the price

Pros: Great Focus not as fast as my Canon 16-35 and my 17-40mm L lens but it gets the job done.. shots are awesome, some shots are better than my 17-40... very light, small compare to my Canon L lens.... I would recommend to buy this if your on a budget..

Cons: LOUD, loud oh did i say it was loud

Other Thoughts: did i say it was loud.......... hahahah

4 out of 5 eggsHard to beat

Pros: I've had this lens for both the Canon mount and Sony mount and I've taken several hundreds pictures using both a Rebel Xti and a Sony Alpha 700. This lens is wonderful. The quality is oustanding, and the background blur is quite nice. For the money it is an excellent value.

Cons: I never got fungus or anything on the two copies of this lens that I had over the years.

Other Thoughts: Obviously its not going to be "as good" as the Canon 17-55mm 2.8 lens which costs more than twice as much. But I think most people won't notice the difference. Just search for Tamron 17-50 on flickr and you'll see so many sample portraits etc.

1 out of 5 eggsNOT WORTH IT

Pros: Honestly.. not a lot of good things to say about this lens ...
Yeah its a good price but not even worth the money...

Cons: Poor focus, extremely disappointed about their AF system
Annoyingly loud! cheap looking/design and most of all...
My lens failed before even turned one year!
It has serious amount of fungus built up in the second element, I send it back for repair and just today I got a letter from Tamron USA that estimate cost of repair is $300!!!!
They claim that the lens has been abused and miss handled, and this is absurd since I keep all of my gear together and I actually take care of it!
So please don't make the same mistake... save your money and get your self EF 24-70mm f2.8L > that's what i end up doing!

Other Thoughts: I also have Sigma 10-20mm and I'm really happy with it
If I ever have to make a choice between third party lenses I would get the Sigma any day!

4 out of 5 eggsVery Decent Performer

Pros: - Real sharp throughout the focal range and f-stops
- Price (!)
- Light weight
- constant f2.8

Cons: - AF misses (strong highlights, very-low lights)
- Build Quality (not bad, but not exceptional)
- Included hood does not help much against flares

Other Thoughts: If you are on a budget but need a decent standard zoom lens for your APS-C sensor camera,
